ASAP Rocky Gun Trial: What to Know About the Case
Rocky has pleaded not guilty in the case, which stems from an alleged 2021 shooting incident.
Just under a year after a Los Angeles judge ruled that ASAP Rocky must stand trial in a gun case linked to an alleged 2021 incident involving ASAP Relli, the proceedings are slated to begin later this month.
Below, we take a look at the long-gestating case, including what, exactly, Rocky is being accused of by his former friend and ASAP Mob alum.
What’s being alleged?
In April 2022, LAPD reps announced their arrest of Rocky in connection with a shooting they said took place in November 2021. The shooting, according to police’s initial statement, took place in the Hollywood area on Nov. 6, 2021.
The shooting is alleged to have been preceded by “an argument between two acquaintances” that escalated until the suspect, alleged to be Rocky, fired a gun at the victim. While the alleged victim was not named in the LAPD news release, it was said that the individual, later revealed to be ASAP Relli, had received medical treatment for “a minor injury.”
Police turned the case over to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, led by George Gascón. By November of last year, Terell Ephron, f.k.a. ASAP Relli, had testified. Alleged video showing moments of the incident in question were also shown in court.
What’s Rocky charged with?
In August 2022, Gascón’s office announced that Rocky would be facing two counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm with allegations of personally using a firearm. The “personally using” qualifier, as should be clear, is added in instances whee prosecutors are accusing the charged individual of being directly involved with the accused firearm use.
“Discharging a gun in a public place is a serious offense that could have ended with tragic consequences not only for the person targeted but also for innocent bystanders visiting Hollywood,” Gascón said at the time. “My office conducted a thorough review of the evidence in this case and determined that the addition of a special firearm allegation was warranted.”
Rocky has pleaded not guilty.
What could happen?
The trial begins Oct. 21. As of last November, prosecutors were saying that Rocky could get as much as 24 years behind bars if convicted as charged, per the Associated Press.
