]]>
Knysna, one of the most popular tourist towns situated on one of the most scenic drives in the world the Garden Route, is home to one of South Africa’s most unusual hotels.

Situated on Knysna’s Thesen Islands, a multi-award-winning marina development in the scenic Knysna estuary, this fabulously quirky hotel – that emerged from an old power station – offers stunning panoramas, exceptional cuisine and luxurious accommodation.

There’s quite a story behind the transformation of what was a working power station to what is now a modern-day masterpiece of architectural ingenuity – the 5-star Turbine BouEque Hotel and Spa.

Bring Back The Past

Knysna is a small town with a huge history.

Originally the area was inhabited by the Khoisan. Then the Dutch settlers arrived in the 17th century. In 1804, George Rex (rumoured to be the illegitimate son of King George lll) arrived and established a port and a timber business. In the late 1800s, the Thesen family moved from Norway to Knysna and founded various businesses. Many years later in 1904, the Norwegian Charles Wilhelm Thesen (son of Arndt Thesen one of the founding fathers of Knysna) bought Paarden Island (now Thesen) and in 1922 he established a timber processing plant on the island.

In 1939 a power station, fuelled by the enormous amount of wood waste generated by the sawmills was built to provide power to the towns of Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, and also to the ESKOM national grid until it was decommissioned in 2001.

By 2007 the island and many of the old buildings had been declared a Heritage site and the derelict power station building was purchased by the visionary hoteliers Geoff Engel and Dandre Lerm-Engel. They spent the next three years fulfilling their dream to restore the original equipment and buildings.

In 2010 the result of their hard work and outstanding creative genius was unveiled to the world – the Turbine Boutique Hotel and Spa was born.

And today…all the old industrial machinery and bits and bobs from the old power station have been kept and are everywhere in the building – cleverly distributed, restored, re-imagined, revamped, and given a colourful coat of paint to blend in with the hotel’s décor themes. All the parts that have been left in place give rise to the many nooks and crannies …there’s a rich history behind every corner.

Rooms With A View

With Standard and Luxury Rooms, a Honeymoon Suite, with a balcony overlooking the rim flow pool and some of the hotel’s best views, plus two gorgeous, self-contained home-away-from-home suites adjacent to the hotel, guests are spoiled for choice! To reflect the rich cultural, historical and geographic diversity of Knysna the 24 bedrooms and suites are individually decorated, themed and named and are spread out over six wings – The Garden Wing, The Lagoon, The Regatta, The Forest, The Thesen and The Lookout Suites.

Facilities at the Turbine Hotel include the Turbine Spa where guests can rejuvenate with tailor-made and natural treatments or they can relax on the deck beside the rim-flow pool.

And there’s Art too

Adding something quite extraordinary to the already extraordinary is the Turbine’s “moving” Art gallery. All the original artworks on the walls throughout the hotel – vibrant, large and awesome – are by local South African artists and are for sale. The hotel takes great pride in featuring its local talent and supporting its heritage.

All Things Green

Since its inception, the Turbine has, in its efforts to be as eco-friendly as possible successfully merged its historical and contemporary values with its green practices and sustainability.

In December 2022, it made a history-making, turning-full-circle move when it began a new phase of generating electricity. 90 Solar panels were installed to feed into the hotel’s electricity supply reducing Eskom usage and lowering the hotel’s carbon footprint.

Over the years the hotel has managed to maintain a relatively light footprint due to the range of energy and water-saving measures incorporated and implemented – from the recycling and re-imagined use of all the old power station effects and materials to a rainwater harvesting system (Knysna is a water-scarce region so consumption savings are imperative) and a myriad of other measures, plus the more recent installations of batteries and inverters to reduce the use of the generator, a solar system and a backup generator to ensure that load shedding outages are a thing of the past.

Food, Glorious Food

Rivalling other Knysna restaurants the 90-seater Island Café, with a spacious terrace overlooking the canal is perfect for al fresco dining. It’s open daily and offers breakfast, lunch and dinner and also monthly food and wine pairings. The vibey Gastro Pub offers classic pub meals with a delicious turbine twist, on-tap draught beer, a comprehensively stocked cellar and views across the canals – perfect for the ‘Happy Hour’ every Friday evening with a live music line-up of local musicians. Here too, the Turbine’s commitment to sustainability extends to the culinary experience with head chef Greg Coleman ensuring the hotel’s cuisine follows the farm-to-table and ocean-to-table philosophy. All fish is sourced locally and the organic herbs and salads are supplied by local farmers. All its food waste goes to a local pig farmer and as Chef Greg’s hobby is beekeeping, they use his honey as much as possible.

Today, quite rightly, the Turbine BouEque Hotel and Spa is heralded as an icon of Knysna’s heritage, social, economic, ecological integration and environmental sustainability.

The best stories unfold in moments slow – In people, in details, in hearts that glow.

When Ahnasa Luxury Travel set out to craft my ultimate safari, they didn’t just look for luxury – they sought a narrative. A place where conservation and sustainability is not an afterthought but the beating heart of the experience. That’s why they brought me here – to El Karama Lodge, a safari written not just across the golden landscapes of Laikipia but in the warmth of its people, the pulse of its wildlife, and the thoughtful touches that make every moment feel both intentional and effortless.

Before there was a lodge, before there were sundowners or game drives, there was simply a family and a vision. Conservation has always been at the heart of El Karama’s story – long before ecotourism became a buzzword. Decades ago, Sophie and Murray Grant’s family began protecting this land, restoring its ecosystems, and proving that conservation thrives not through fences and separation but through coexistence.

What started as a working ranch in the 1960s became Kenya’s first private conservancy – El Karama – a model for how land, wildlife, and people can thrive together. And today, that legacy is woven into every part of the experience here.

From my own experience, I can say without hesitation that El Karama Lodge may be a place you come to for adventure, but you will return for the feeling of belonging.

Small is Beautiful, Small is Powerful

El Karama Lodge is small, yet mighty and true,
Where intimate moments shape the view.

In a world of sprawling, corporate safari operations, El Karama Lodge stands as proof that ‘small’ is beautiful, ‘small’ is powerful, and ‘small’ is the future of sustainable tourism.

Owner-operated and family-run, every decision here is made with intention. Growth is organic, driven by what benefits the land, the wildlife, the community, and the guests seeking an experience, not just a stay. Success isn’t measured in numbers; it’s seen in the strength of the people who work here, the way the landscape flourishes, and the lodge’s ability to grow without ever losing its soul.

And that sense of belonging runs deep. Take my guide, Robinson, as the perfect example. Born and raised on this land, he grew up watching his parents work at the El Karama Farm HQ. His journey began with tending cattle, before transitioning into guiding, a path that feels as much a calling as a career, his story a privilege to listen to.

Many of the team have been here since the beginning, and those who weren’t born in the conservancy come from the surrounding areas, their knowledge of the land woven into them through generations. If the bush is the theatre, the team are the storytellers – each with their chapter interwoven with the conservancy’s own – from Neambura’s warm smile at breakfast to the chefs who turn local ingredients into culinary magic.

The memories remain in the small, exquisite moments: A hot water bottle tucked into my lap on a crisp morning game drive or in my bed each evening; The way the team remembered my pre-bed tea order before I even had to ask; And their infectious laughter as they “hunted” me down on the running track when I casually mentioned needing some exercise – turns out, the chase is just as fun as the catch.

It is these quiet, personal touches that make El Karama Lodge unforgettable.

A Setting of Thoughtful Luxury

Even the setting stands in a world of its own,
Where nature and comfort are seamlessly sewn.

My home during my stay was Nilotica Private House – an exclusive-use retreat that feels like a world of its own. Slightly removed from the main Lodge’s eight cottages, it offers privacy for families or small groups, wildly immersive and designed for connection. Even the smallest corners invite pause and reflection – like the hidden swings, the perfect spot to ‘hang out’ after an exhilarating game drive, letting the bush wrap around me like a well-worn safari jacket as curious monkeys swung by to check out the latest visitor in their territory.

True to the Lodge’s ethos, luxury here isn’t about what’s added but what’s honoured. Riverbed-quarried rock shapes the bath and shower, while fallen trees from the conservancy become bedposts that cradle your rest. What can’t be repurposed from the land is sourced within Kenya – like Cinnabar Green’s organic soaps, quite literally ‘powered by plants.’

The Grant family’s authenticity is woven throughout – Sophie curates each space with warmth and character, while Murray’s bronze sculptures, cast from real animal footprints and skulls, offer conservation frozen in time. Every aspect of the lodge uplifts the community, from job creation to local artisans, ensuring tourism’s benefits stay rooted in Laikipia. Nowhere is this clearer than in the team itself; like Irene, who began in housekeeping, was trained in massage, and now masters her craft with hands that tell a story of opportunity, growth, and care.

I couldn’t have felt more connected to place and purpose.

A Safari Beyond Sightings

At El Karama Lodge, it’s not a safari race,
It’s feeling the wild at nature’s own pace.

No staggered encounters, no manufactured drama, no safari ‘checklist’. We sat, we watched, we listened. A herd of elephants moving through golden light on our evening game drive. A lilac-breasted roller flashing across the sky – nature’s own flying paintbrush. A jackal and her pups weaving through the grass as dawn breaks over our walking safari – a moment so pure, so unfiltered, I forgot the modern world existed.

And then, the gerenuk (the ‘giraffe antelope’) – or as I now think of them, nature’s ballerinas. It was my first time seeing these impossibly elegant creatures, their long necks and delicate frames like something out of a forgotten fable. We stopped the vehicle and just watched. One rose onto its hind legs, stretching impossibly high to nibble fresh leaves, defying gravity with effortless grace. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, the bush offers up another surprise.

Safari options here are plentiful – game drives and walking safaris in a conservancy home to four of the Big Five, plus endangered species like the Reticulated Giraffe and Grevy’s Zebra. Some drift off beneath a sky spilling with stars on a fly-camping adventure, lulled by the sounds of the night. Others explore on horseback, moving quietly as giraffes pause to watch them pass.

But safari at El Karama Lodge isn’t just about what you see – it’s about how you feel. I found my rhythm in quiet afternoons at Nilotica, cooling off in Kenya’s first eco-swimming pool as wildlife wandered past in silent companionship. I crossed paths with the lodge’s resident monitor lizard, sweated off another delicious lunch at the gym, and shared laughter (and fierce competition) over a game of Mancala with the team. Down at the stables, I spent time with the gentle horses before heading back for an afternoon of stillness, the hush of the bush settling into my bones.

El Karama Lodge also quietly debunks the myth that safaris aren’t for children. Here, the bush is a playground of imagination and discovery, in the form of the much-loved Bush School. And for parents? A rare gift – time to slip away for a spa treatment or a long, lazy lunch by the pool. This commitment to young minds extends beyond visiting families, with the lodge investing in the next generation of conservationists through school visits, mentorship, and internships.

Evenings unfold at secret sundowner spots, where I felt like I was in the live remake of The Lion King, watching the sky blush over the savannah before returning to camp. We gathered by the fire, where stories flowed as easily as the drinks in hand, laughter rising into the night air. And as the final embers faded, the bush settled into its rhythm – the nocturnal symphony of a land that never truly sleeps.

Food For Thought

What’s grown, what’s sourced, what’s served with grace,
Honours the land, this sacred place.

At first glance, the food might sound simple. But this is where El Karama Lodge shines – taking what can be grown from the land, and elevating it into something unforgettable.

Everything fresh is sourced within a strict 60-70 km radius or grown right here in their wild shamba, where the team uses drip irrigation to sustain crops through the dry months. Grass-fed beef and sheep from a neighbouring farm, hand-line caught fish from sustainable fisheries on the coast, vegetables from the conservancy itself – it’s all carefully considered, all designed to keep supply chains short and impact long-lasting.

But once again it’s the smallest touches that linger. The surprise bush breakfast on the banks of the river where hippos surface and sink whilst we watch our chef make breakfast right in front of our eyes; the flowers from the shamba that don’t just decorate the plate – they become part of the dish; how each meal begins with a smoothie-based shot of goodness and a different type of freshly baked bread; and watching the magic happen in the open lodge kitchen, where young explorers don aprons and bake treats alongside the chefs.

The ripple effect of this thoughtful approach extends far beyond the plate. Take Lucy, a trusted supplier for over 15 years. With her income from El Karama Lodge, she bought land, educated her family, and built a sustainable future. This is true sustainability – not just cutting waste or installing solar panels, but making sure every decision uplifts the people and places that make a lodge like this possible.

And the experience is still evolving. The Lodge’s Wild Shamba is being transformed into an interactive space where guests can plant, harvest, and taste the results under the shade of guava trees. A new experience that will celebrate slow, intentional cooking, and yet another reminder that at El Karama Lodge, everything is real, tangible, and rooted in the land itself.

Conservation Never Sleeps

Conservation thrives through action and care,
A hands-on approach that’s always aware.

Take the elephants. As they strip Boscia trees and push them over, the delicate balance of the woodland is shifting. To counter this, El Karama Lodge wraps Boscia trunks in wire to prevent debarking, safeguarding vital habitats for secretary birds and nesting species. They’ve also established pilot exclusion zones, giving young trees a fighting chance to grow, while a major riverbank restoration effort, powered by local school children planting Indigenous species along the Lodge’s internal riverfrontage, is bringing indigenous species back to life. This is conservation in action, where education and impact go hand in hand.

And it doesn’t stop at the fence line. They’ve designed leopard-proof, flatpack bomas for livestock – ingenious, modular systems that keep predators out while allowing sheep and cattle to graze freely. The concept has proven so effective that it’s now being adopted elsewhere, a testament to conservation that serves both people and wildlife.

Now, a new chapter is unfolding, with the Laikipia region being explored for its potential role in conservation’s next frontier – one that could see expanded habitats supporting keystone species (such as the black rhino) and ecosystem resilience. But, as always, the challenge isn’t just about land – it’s about people. Ensuring long-term success means balancing ecological needs with community collaboration, and navigating the complexities of shared landscapes.

Because, ultimately, conservation without people means nothing. El Karama Lodge understands this better than most. After all, that’s how they began – by creating something that worked for the land, for the people, and for the future.

A Story That Stays With You

As El Karama Lodge’s tale grows each day,
My chapter ends – until my next stay!

Each guest takes home their own version of El Karama Lodge’s story. Some take home the thrill of their first lion sighting, others the warmth of shared laughter over dinner or the quiet magic of a morning walk. Some are inspired by Sophie’s handcrafted linen, timeless and made for safari life, while others pack her cookbook, eager to recreate the lodge’s flavours. Many tuck away a handmade children’s book by Lavinia, a keepsake of the wonder found here.

For me what lingers longest is the feeling – of something rare, something deeply personal, something small yet as vast as the savannah itself.

If this is the kind of safari that speaks to you, Ahnasa Luxury Travel can craft it just as they did for me. Their expertise lies not just in finding the perfect places, but in understanding that the best stories aren’t just told, they are lived.

The land breathes here. It inhales the past, the stories etched into stone, the whispers of the wind through ancient rock formations. It exhales life, regeneration, the quiet pulse of nature reclaiming itself. Bushman’s Kloof is not a place to rush through; it’s a place to slow down, to let the wilderness wrap around you, to feel your own breath sync with the rhythm of the earth.

Tucked away in the Cederberg Mountains, this private wilderness reserve and wellness spans 7,500 hectares, once farmland, now a testament to the patience of nature’s restoration. Four farms were merged to create what it is today, and while remnants of its past life still linger – patches of farmland, the ongoing battle against invasive plant species like boar Jackson – the transformation is evident. Indigenous species like the Cape Mountain zebra have returned, the land flourishes with over 300 plant species, and the happiness of the animals tells its own story. Something is humbling about seeing what happens when nature is finally allowed to catch its breath.

That sense of time slowing down began the moment we arrived. In our suite, a welcome letter rested on the desk, a thoughtful touch that immediately made us feel at home, alongside some delicious homemade treats and our very own Bushman’s Kloof caps. The room itself was a step back in time, blending old-world charm with modern comfort. Rich wooden furniture, delicate antique touches, and earthy tones reflected the surrounding landscape. The four-poster bed—raised high with steps leading up to it—was impossibly inviting, the kind of place you melt into after a long day exploring. Even before arriving, our pillow preferences had been noted, a small but telling detail in Bushman’s Kloof’s quiet luxury.

With only 17 rooms at the main lodge and the exclusive-use Koro Lodge for families with younger children, Bushman’s Kloof offers a more intimate kind of safari. Here, there are no roaring predators, no hurried game drives in pursuit of a sighting. Instead, mornings unfold gently, with the choice of a guided drive or a self-led walk through the wilderness. Walking alone in a game reserve isn’t something many places allow, but here, you’re part of the landscape – wandering past grazing antelope, watching zebra flick their tails, feeling the hush of the wild settling around you. It’s not about chasing the highs, but about exhaling into the rhythm of the land.

Evenings belong to the wilderness. Londi, our guide for the trip and a fixture at Bushman’s Kloof for over 16 years led us on drives where golden hour bathed the landscape in a soft glow. Baby antelope played in the long fynbos, their energy light and carefree, as if carried by the breeze. As the sun dipped lower, we were pulled up by a dam, glasses in hand, watching the sky burn with colour before fading into deep blue. On night drives, we craned our necks to take in the spectacle above – stars splattered across the sky, the Milky Way a luminous river stretching endlessly overhead. Every inhale carried the scent of the wild, every exhale a quiet surrender to the moment.

But the true history of Bushman’s Kloof is written in stone. The Cederberg Mountains is home to over 7,000 recorded rock art sites, with 120-130 found on this reserve alone. Some of these paintings date back 10,000 years, telling the stories of the San and Khoi people. Fine-line depictions of eland and trance dances, bold finger-painted herding scenes – art that isn’t just history, but a living record of belief, survival, and connection to the land. Unlike other historical sites, these can’t be protected under glass; the sandstone needs to breathe, left undisturbed. “Look, but don’t touch,” Londi reminded us. We didn’t need to. The energy in these places was tangible. The past lingers here like a breath held just beneath the surface.

On the walk to one of the sites, Londi stopped to show us how the San people used the land for more than just paint. A small plant, its leaves delicate in his fingers, became a demonstration of the first paintbrush – chewed at the end to create bristles. Others were remedies: fever medicine, headache relief, and antidotes for scorpion stings. Then, the first soap – an unassuming leaf that, when rubbed between my hands, transformed into a frothy lather, releasing a fresh scent as it cleaned my palms. This knowledge, passed down through generations, still lingers in the air here, waiting to be shared.

Afternoons stretched in lazy luxury. Some found solace in the cool retreat of the spa, where natural fynbos and rooibos-infused products soothed sun-warmed skin. After my massage, I drifted to one of the reserve’s pools, lying back as lilies floated on the water’s surface, the heat of the day coaxing me into a soft, dreamlike haze. Others sought adventure – archery, fly fishing, mountain biking, each activity moving at its own unhurried pace.

One afternoon, I chose the water. Canoes waited at the edge of the dam, their bright colours striking against the glassy surface. Paddling out, we moved through rippling reflections of the ochre cliffs, the only sound the occasional splash of an oar. The wind fought us as we pressed on, but determination (and a desire for discovery) kept us going. Then, tucked away behind a bend, we found it: a hidden cove, where a small sandbank rose like an island, untouched and serene. We pulled up, stretching out on the warm sand, the golden afternoon light wrapping around us. It felt like a secret place, a moment stolen from time. Even the baboons, ever the opportunists, seemed to approve – ambling along the shoreline, playing in the trees, always watching.

Dining at Bushman’s Kloof is an experience in itself; rooted in sustainability, and crafted with care. At the Makana, where dinner is served beneath a thatched roof and candlelit glow, much of what appears on the plate comes straight from the retreat’s gardens. Each morning, the chef walks through rows of herbs and vegetables, bowl in hand, selecting what’s needed for the day. Fish is sourced through the Abalobi app, ensuring direct support for small-scale South African fishers. Meat comes from local farmers, and anything left over – whether composted into the gardens or shared with subsistence farmers – never goes to waste.

But Bushman’s Kloof isn’t just about preserving the past; it’s about safeguarding the future. Conservation runs through every aspect of the reserve. The Cape Leopard Trust works to protect the elusive big cats roaming these mountains. The Sand Fish Project, an initiative started in 2014, has been working to restore a migratory fish species endemic to this region—once down to just eight making the journey, now steadily recovering. Even the endangered Clanwilliam cedar trees are nurtured here, grown from saplings before being reintroduced to the mountains they once thrived in, in collaboration with the Botanical Society and Western Cape Nature Conservation. Most importantly, education is prioritised through collaborations with local schools to show children the importance of ecosystems, flora and fauna, ancient rock art, and protecting these important lands.

Sustainability is embedded in the details: filtered borehole water eliminates the need for plastic bottles, greywater is recycled to irrigate the gardens, and glass replaces plastic wherever possible—even seemingly plastic items, like shower caps, are made from biodegradable cornstarch. The staff, over 100 of them, live here with their families in a close-knit village, their presence deeply intertwined with the land they care for. Every team member is given volunteer days each year to support causes they care about, reinforcing the idea that sustainability isn’t just about the land – it’s about people, too.

On our final morning, I took one last walk, following a path laid out by the reserve. Alone, with only the whisper of the wind and the occasional rustle of an animal in the brush, I breathed deeply, taking in the scent of sun-warmed fynbos. This is a place that doesn’t demand attention but quietly works its way into your soul. A place where nature is not just something to witness but something to be part of.

A place that, if you let it, will breathe life back into you.

Ahnasa Safaris is redefining luxury safari travel with its bespoke experiences, curated by the dynamic mother-daughter duo, Phera and Pana. Their deep passion for Africa’s wilderness, conservation, and exceptional hospitality sets them apart. We explore their journey, inspirations, and vision:

What motivated you both to create Ahnasa Safaris and how did your journey in luxury travel begin?

Ahnasa was born from a love story—one written by the land itself. Our journey wasn’t shaped by business plans or market trends but by an unyielding passion for Africa—its breathtaking landscapes, its deep-rooted cultures, and the undeniable magic that binds them together.

For us, travel is more than an escape; it’s a bridge to connection, discovery, and purpose. Growing up and living in Kenya, we’ve been shaped by Africa’s untamed beauty and the profound relationship between people and nature. It is this deep connection that we cherish and wish to share with you, our guests. We invite our guests to experience the wonder, the reverence, and the transformation that only Africa can offer.

Africa is more than a destination; it’s a journey into something greater. It has given us moments of awe and purpose, and with that, a responsibility—to protect, preserve, and share its stories. Ahnasa was created not just to curate safaris, but to invite you into Africa’s soul.

Our mission is to craft journeys that are as enriching as they are exhilarating—experiences that honour the wilderness, celebrate its people, and leave every guest forever changed. Through transformative travel, we strive to make a meaningful impact, ensuring that Africa’s wild places continue to inspire for generations to come.

How does your mother-daughter dynamic influence the way you run the business and create experiences?

Our dynamic is rooted in shared values, deep trust, and a complementary vision. Pana brings decades of expertise in luxury hospitality and an intimate knowledge of Africa’s most extraordinary destinations, while Phera infuses Ahnasa with fresh perspectives, innovation, and a keen sense of what modern travellers seek. Together, we love to create experiences that are both timeless and contemporary—elegant, adventurous and always deeply immersive. We approach every journey as if we were planning it for family, ensuring every detail is crafted with warmth, authenticity, and a personal touch.

What does the name Ahnasa represent, and how does it reflect in your safari experiences?

Ahnasa is more than just a name; it embodies what we strive to create—moments that take your breath away. A safari with Ahnasa is about reconnecting with nature, breathing in the vastness of Africa’s untouched landscapes, and experiencing a sense of profound stillness and wonder. It’s about slowing down, immersing in the rhythm of the wild, and rediscovering a deep, almost spiritual connection with the earth. Our guests often tell us they leave with a renewed sense of clarity and appreciation for the natural world—that is Ahnasa.

What sets the Ahnasa safari experience apart from other safari offerings?

Ahnasa is more than a safari company—it is a deeply personal endeavour, co-founded by a mother and daughter duo whose lives have been shaped by Africa’s untamed beauty. Now a proudly women-led travel design house, we craft journeys that go beyond luxury to create something truly rare: an experience that is both profoundly personal and deeply connected to the land.

Unlike conventional safaris, every Ahnasa journey is a reflection of our unwavering passion for Africa. Living on this continent allows us to intimately understand its rhythms, its breathtaking contrasts, and the extraordinary people who call it home. This first-hand knowledge translates into safaris that are as immersive as they are luxurious—meticulously designed to honour both the traveller’s dreams and the soul of Africa itself.

For us, curating a safari isn’t just about indulgence; it’s about transformation. From private encounters with wildlife in remote, untouched landscapes to moments of quiet reflection in the heart of the wilderness, we ensure that every journey is a story waiting to be told. Our safaris are immersive, responsible, and deeply intentional—crafted with the belief that travel should leave a lasting impact, not just on the traveller, but on the places and people that make each experience extraordinary.
With Ahnasa, you are not just a guest. You are part of a journey that lingers long after the last sunset, woven into the fabric of Africa’s timeless magic.

How do you ensure exclusivity and personalisation in the experiences you arrange for your clients?

It all begins with getting to know you—our Guest. Understanding your travel dreams, your vision for your travels in Africa, and the moments you long to experience. With our deep expertise, first-hand knowledge, and passion for this extraordinary continent, we craft journeys that bring those dreams to life.

Our carefully curated portfolio of exceptional destinations, stunning properties, immersive experiences, and trusted network of experts allows us to design seamless, one-of-a-kind safaris that are as inspiring as they are unforgettable. Every journey is thoughtfully tailored, ensuring that your time in Africa is nothing short of extraordinary.

Conservation and sustainability are a major point now in luxury travel, how does Ahnasa ensure responsible tourism?

At Ahnasa, sustainability is at the heart of every journey we design. We believe that true luxury lies in the ability to explore Africa’s breathtaking landscapes while actively protecting them for future generations.

We thoughtfully partner with companies that share our deep commitment to conservation, community empowerment, and low-impact tourism. From solar-powered retreats and sustainable architecture to responsible waste management and ethical wildlife encounters, we ensure that every aspect of our safaris upholds the highest environmental and ethical standards.

A portion of every guest’s safari directly supports vital initiatives, including wildlife protection, reforestation efforts, and community-driven projects—contributions that Ahnasa proudly matches. We also champion farm-to-table dining experiences that celebrate fresh, locally grown and sourced ingredients, further reducing our footprint while supporting local farmers and artisans.

For us, luxury and sustainability are not opposing ideals; they are seamlessly intertwined. Ahnasa offers transformative journeys that immerse guests in Africa’s beauty while ensuring their presence leaves a lasting, positive impact. When you travel with us, you are not just experiencing Africa—you are actively preserving its future.

What are some of the most unique or memorable bespoke safaris you have arranged?

Where do we even begin? Every journey we curate holds a special place in our hearts, each one an unforgettable story woven with wonder, adventure, and a touch of magic.

One particularly memorable safari is a month-long honeymoon we designed in Kenya and Rwanda, back when Ahnasa was still in its early days. We crafted an experience that blended immersive wildlife encounters with secluded moments of romance—sunrise game drives, private candlelit dinners in the wild, and the breathtaking intimacy of gorilla trekking in Rwanda’s misty mountains. It was a love story written by Africa itself, and our guests felt it deeply:

“Thank you, Ahnasa Destinations, for everything. It’s difficult not to cry happy tears when thinking about this journey—so grateful. I think my wife will agree that it’s been a life-changing trip!! Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

This is why we do what we do. We don’t just design safaris; we create experiences that touch the soul.

This year, we had the privilege of designing an exciting safari which took guests deep into Southern Tanzania, where they explored the wild, untamed beauty of Ruaha and Selous before retreating to an intimate private island—a sanctuary of barefoot luxury. Another unforgettable journey saw travellers trekking across the Great Rift Valley, from the emerald depths of Empakaai Crater to the remote, otherworldly shores of Lake Natron, where flamingos wade in endless pink swirls beneath towering volcanic peaks.
And truthfully? We could go on forever. Each safari is a labour of love, a chance to share the Africa we hold so dear. Every journey we curate is not just a trip—it’s a story waiting to be told, and we are honoured to be part of it.

Luxury travel is evolving, what trends are you seeing, and how is Ahnasa meeting these changes?

Luxury travel has evolved beyond opulence—it is now defined by exclusivity, authenticity, and experiences that leave an indelible mark on the soul. Today’s travellers seek more than just a journey; they long for immersive adventures, private escapes, and moments that forge profound connections with the world around them. At Ahnasa, this has been our passion from the very beginning.

We are a small, dedicated team of women, intentionally keeping our circle close so that every guest receives our full attention. For us, curating safaris isn’t about itineraries—it’s about crafting journeys that awaken the senses and spark a connection, whether with oneself, loved ones, or the extraordinary people of Africa. With a handpicked collection of the most exclusive destinations, properties, and experience makers, we don’t just recommend places—we explore them, ensuring that each safari is as authentic as it is extraordinary.

And now, we’re taking it even further! We are thrilled to soon introduce the Ahnasa App—a game-changer in personalized travel.

Do you have a personal favourite safari destination, and what makes it special to you?

KALPANA: While every destination has its magic, Northern Kenya holds a special place in my heart. It’s a land of raw, untouched, stunning beauty where time slows, and nature speaks in whispers. There’s something truly profound about the deep connection between the land, the people, and the wildlife here. Walking with the Samburu, listening to their ancient wisdom, and experiencing the vast wilderness without another soul in sight—it’s the kind of experience that changes you.

And if there’s one more experience I could share with you, it would be mountain gorilla trekking. Nothing prepares you for that moment when you lock eyes with a gorilla in the misty forests of Volcanoes National Park. It’s humbling, awe-inspiring, and so deeply moving that even now, my heart skips a beat just thinking about it. These are the moments that make travel unforgettable—the ones that stay with you long after you return home. And if you’ve ever dreamed of experiencing Africa in this way, I can promise you, it’s even more incredible than you imagine.

PHERA: Oh, this is a tough one! It’s a toss-up between Ruaha National Park and Zambia (yes, I know—I just named an entire country!). For me, it’s all about the moments and connections I’ve experienced in these places. I celebrated my 30th birthday in Ruaha, and it was pure magic—from the fiery colours of the sunset to spotting my first leopard cubs! But what made it even more special was seeing my guide’s sheer excitement in finding them—it turned an unforgettable sighting into an emotional, shared experience.

And Zambia… where do I even begin? Zambia was my very first solo trip (which, by the way, I highly recommend to everyone!). That journey changed me, both personally and professionally. It was a chance to push my boundaries, meet incredible people, and dive into new adventures. That’s one of the things I love most about what I do—this job constantly pushes me out of my comfort zone and challenges me to try everything at least once. After all, how can I recommend an experience to our guests if I haven’t lived it myself?

What’s next for Ahnasa? Are there any exciting new projects or expansions on the horizon?

At Ahnasa, we are always evolving, driven by a deep passion for crafting the most extraordinary African journeys. Luxury travel, for us, is about connection, meaning, and the kind of moments that stay with you forever. That’s why we’re expanding into new destinations, curating private island retreats, and unveiling one-of-a-kind experiential safaris that redefine what it means to explore Africa. More than ever, we are deepening our commitment to conservation and community-driven initiatives, offering opportunities for guests to actively participate in wildlife protection and cultural preservation. Because true luxury is not just about experiencing beauty—it’s about making a lasting impact.

One of the most exciting news we want to share is the addition of Botswana to Ahnasa’s Destinations Portfolio! In April, Pana and I will embark on an incredible, exciting 12-day adventure through the breathtaking Okavango Delta, exploring its diverse landscapes, staying at six incredible properties, and immersing ourselves in the experiences that make this place so magical. First-hand knowledge is at the heart of what we do, and this journey will ensure that when we craft an itinerary, we do so with true expertise and passion.

And there’s more—our dream of a seamless, interactive, and deeply personalized safari experience is about to become a reality with the upcoming launch of the Ahnasa App—a game-changer in personalised travel! This has been a vision of ours from the very beginning, and seeing it come to life is beyond exciting. Our App will seamlessly elevate every guest’s experience, from the very first inquiry to the final golden sunset, ensuring that the journey doesn’t begin upon arrival—but from the instant you say yes to Africa!

The journey ahead is as thrilling as the wild landscapes we explore, and we can’t wait to share it with travellers who seek the extraordinary. If Africa is calling, trust us—it’s even more incredible than you imagine.

In a world where safari travel can be reduced to ‘bucket-list ticking’, Ahnasa Luxury Travel stands apart, curating experiences that are as meaningful as they are exclusive. Specialising in bespoke journeys that weave together luxury, authenticity, and sustainability, Ahnasa is redefining high-end travel by connecting discerning adventurers with hand-picked destinations in Africa that leave a lasting impact – both on their treasured guests and the places they visit.

A Passion-Driven, Women-Led Vision

What makes Ahnasa truly unique is the powerful mother-daughter duo at its helm. As a women-owned and led company, Ahnasa is driven by a deep, shared passion for conservation and transformative travel experiences. Despite being a small but mighty team, their influence in the luxury travel space is undeniable. Their hands-on approach ensures that every journey is intentionally designed, working with trusted suppliers and lodges that offer the best in exclusivity, alongside social and environmental responsibility.

With Ahnasa, luxury is always in the details!

The Art of Bespoke Travel: In-Action

At the heart of Ahnasa’s philosophy is a commitment to personalisation. Every journey is tailored to the desires of the guest, ensuring a deeply immersive experience that goes beyond the ordinary.

Luxuria Lifestyle is delighted to be able to experience this first-hand, with our own bespoke trip to Kenya, focusing on safaris at the intersection of exclusivity and sustainability. An exciting itinerary put together seamlessly by Ahnasa pairs two distinct yet complementary camps: Tumaren and El Karama’s Nilotica House, each offering a unique perspective on Kenya’s breathtaking landscapes, wildlife, and culture.

One of the main reasons Ahnasa chose these camps for this exclusive trip is that they have sustainability, conservation and positive community impact at the heart of their operations, something critical for this trip.

Ahnasa, with their expertise in the area, combined these camps also because of the logistical ease of moving from one to the other, another key element that was required for this short but exciting trip, to prioritise more time at each property and memorable experiences.

So let’s understand a bit more about the properties being visited:

Tumaren Camp

The first visit will be to Tumaren camp for two nights. Hidden within the vast wilderness of Laikipia, Tumaren is an intimate camp that epitomises understated luxury in the wild. This secluded retreat is run by the dedicated team behind Karisia Walking Safaris, offering guests a rare chance to explore Kenya’s wilderness on foot.

Tumaren Camp is part of a 10,500-acre conservation area that is managed by the Karisia team, who are all local to the area. It is an ideal retreat for multi-generational families looking for an exclusive and intimate safari experience. With its small, private setting, one group can easily take over the entire camp, ensuring a truly personalised and unforgettable adventure in the heart of Laikipia.

Activities are plenty, from guided walks to top-rope rock climbing, visiting the local markets and schools, and playing ultimate frisbee against a local team of primary school students. Of course, not to forget exciting game drives for wildlife enthusiasts!

Nilotica House, El Karama Lodge

The journey will continue at El Karama for two nights, a family-owned luxury eco-lodge set on a private conservancy renowned for its thriving biodiversity. This award-winning lodge is a pioneer in responsible tourism, combining high-end hospitality with a firm commitment to conservation and community empowerment.

Nilotica Private House, an exclusive-use area of the Lodge where we will be staying, offers unmatched privacy, luxury and stunning views of the surrounding conservancy which is perfect for families and small groups of up to 10 guests looking for that next level of exclusivity.

Guests at El Karama experience the ultimate in barefoot luxury, with stylish cottages crafted from natural, locally sourced materials, farm-to-table dining, and immersive wildlife encounters that support conservation initiatives. Whether tracking lions on thrilling game drives, visiting the lodge’s organic farm, or engaging with the local community, every element of a stay here is designed to inspire and educate. For thrill-seekers, helicopter trips and even horseback adventures are available to unlock new ways to safari.

A Perfectly Paired Safari Experience

By combining Tumaren and El Karama in this exclusive itinerary, Ahnasa Luxury Travel offers a rare opportunity to experience two contrasting yet consciously connected safari experiences.

What is Luxuria Lifestyle most looking forward to? Connection and Adventure! Ahnasa understands the need for this experience to be deeply immersive, allowing us to reconnect with nature, wildlife and people at a more intimate pace, whilst still having all the adventurous activities that make safaris so unique and memorable.

Stay tuned for our full review of both properties and experiences soon, and for those seeking to craft their own bespoke safari adventure, Ahnasa invites you to explore, dream, and discover with them!

Tucked away in South Africa’s ruggedly beautiful Cederberg Mountains, Bushman’s Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Wellness Retreat is a place where luxury meets conservation, and nature blends seamlessly with cultural heritage. This award-winning lodge, located just 270 kilometres from Cape Town, offers an extraordinary escape into one of the country’s most pristine landscapes.

More than just a luxury retreat, Bushman’s Kloof is a sanctuary for biodiversity, a guardian of ancient rock art, and a leader in sustainable tourism.

A Wilderness Retreat Like No Other

Bushman’s Kloof sits within a 7,500-hectare private reserve, where rolling sandstone formations, deep gorges, and wildflower-covered plains stretch as far as the eye can see. The reserve is home to an astonishing variety of plant and animal life, including the rare Cape mountain zebra, aardwolf, and over 150 bird species. Visitors can explore this raw and untouched landscape through guided nature drives, hiking trails, and canoeing on crystal-clear rock pools.

For those seeking complete tranquillity, the lodge itself is an oasis of comfort. With just 14 Rooms and 2 Suites (plus the addition of 2 private Villas), guests are ensured an exclusive and intimate experience. The retreat also boasts an award-winning spa, where treatments incorporate indigenous botanicals, offering a holistic wellness experience deeply connected to the land.

Dining in the Wilderness

Bushmans Kloof offers an array of spectacular dining venues, featuring an array of dishes crafted from seasonal produce of the Western Cape. The Homestead and Makana boast delectable daily specialities with outdoor seating, whilst Kadoro is an intimate and secret dining option, and Embers is a dramatic natural amphitheatre under the stars. Private picnics, bush breakfasts and sundowners can be enjoyed in a variety of locations throughout the reserve.

A Living Museum of Ancient Art

One of the most remarkable aspects of Bushman’s Kloof is its status as a custodian of over 130 ancient San rock art sites, some dating back more than 10,000 years. Guided excursions allow guests to witness these sacred artworks firsthand, gaining insight into the deep cultural history of the San people.

Sustainability and Conservation at Its Core

Bushman’s Kloof is not just about luxury; it is a leader in sustainable hospitality. From its strict no-hunting policies, conservation programmes that are reintroducing endemic species, removing alien vegetation, and maintaining water conservation efforts, to its focus on championing community engagement initiatives that are both supporting and uplifting local rural communities.

For those seeking an exclusive, meaningful escape in the heart of nature, Bushman’s Kloof is a destination that truly embodies the essence of sustainable luxury.

The post The Gem Of The Winelands: Emma Blunt Explores The Beauty Of Delaire Graff Estate appeared first on Luxury Safari Magazine.

]]>
The word ‘luxury’ is highly subjective, transcending material definitions of excess and instead being deeply tied to an individual’s perceptions, cultural background, and personal desires. This subjectivity is what makes the concept of luxury so dynamic and intriguing.

However, if there is one place I think everyone would agree deserves this ever-evolving ‘title’, it would be Delaire Graff Estate. Placed perfectly within South Africa’s Stellenbosch wine region, the estate invites you to sink into serenity, surrounded by dramatic views, world-class wine, art that speaks to your soul and a team so professional yet personable, committed to championing community and sustainability.

I was honoured with an invitation to stay at this remarkable estate and spent my time immersed in a multidimensional experience. With every detail meticulously curated and an ethos that marries indulgence with responsibility and a deep sense of place, this destination is as dazzling as the diamonds that inspired it.

So let me take you through what makes this extraordinary estate worthy of winning so many awards, most recently holding the title of Best Accommodation in South Africa (Global Traveller’s award) as well as Decanter’s “Best in Show” 2024 for its Banghoek Chardonnay.

First Impressions: Manicured magic

Driving into the grounds of Delaire Graff Estate, before even making it through the doors, what truly captivated me was the overwhelming sense of tranquillity. Despite its grandeur, the Estate feels intimate and welcoming – a retreat where every element whispers of refined indulgence. Driving up the long entrance, framed by sculptural trees and perfectly manicured hedges, with vibrant bursts of colour unfolding around us, set a smile perfectly on my face (one that remained for the whole stay).

The drive itself is a sensory journey, with the Stellenbosch mountains rising majestically in the background and the vineyard-lined pathways guiding us forward. As the estate’s iconic bronze sculptures come into view, strategically placed amidst the lush greenery, it becomes clear that every detail has been curated to evoke wonder. The gardens are a real living art canvas, with over 350 indigenous plants nestled amongst art sculptures and water features.

By the time we step out of the car, the estate has already set the stage for an unforgettable experience.

Decor And Design: A Setting Of Artistry And Elegance

One of the most striking aspects of the estate’s design that I loved is its seamless integration with the natural landscape. Thanks to the creative visions of estate owner Laurence Graff alongside the interior design expertise of David Collins, the expansive glass walls, open terraces, and sweeping vistas ensure that the breathtaking views of the Stellenbosch mountains and vineyards are part of the interior experience. The interplay between indoor and outdoor spaces invites lush greenery, natural light, and changing seasons into the heart of the estate, creating an environment that feels alive and dynamic.

The interiors shimmer with understated opulence – polished stone and natural woods, prioritising sustainable materials that are locally sourced, to ensure the estate shines not just for its beauty but also for its respect for the environment. Fireplaces, artisan-crafted chandeliers, and handwoven rugs add warmth to common spaces, paying homage to African craftsmanship alongside intentional details such as hand-carved woodwork and ceramic pieces. This rich narrative speaks to the estate’s roots and was a delight to see first-hand.

If wine is the beating heart of the estate, the artwork is the soul that breathes life and creativity into every corner – it’s not an accessory, but a defining feature. The earthy palette of the interiors are enhanced by splashes of vibrant colour from the estate’s extensive private art collection. These pieces, predominantly by contemporary South African artists, add cultural depth and are strategically placed to evoke thoughtful reflection from guests of the rich heritage of the region.

With over 450 pieces throughout the estate interiors and grounds, guests can enjoy a dedicated art tour, which is completely fascinating. For me, the pieces that really stood out were of course the Dylan Lewis cheetah sculptures. With a series of 13 cheetahs in the estate gardens, these life-size bronze sculptures embody the raw beauty, elegance, and power of the cheetah, one of Africa’s most iconic animals. The cheetahs represent both the beauty of South Africa’s wildlife and the fragile balance of its ecosystems. They serve as a poignant reminder of the need to protect these majestic creatures and the land they call home.

A piece of art within the Delaire Graff Restaurant also completely captivated me and is one of many important pieces within the estate which shows their dedication to not only celebrating African art, but also fostering meaningful conversations about heritage, resilience, and change. Eddy Kamuanga Ilunga’s “Fragile” is a prominent piece of contemporary art that explores the delicate balance between tradition and modernity in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Known for his signature figures adorned with electronic circuit patterns, Kamuanga Ilunga highlights the impact of global consumerism and technological advancements on Congolese cultural identity. The title, “Fragile,” underscores the vulnerability of individual and collective identities amid rapid modernisation. Vibrant colours and intricate details contrast with minimalistic backgrounds, creating a striking visual tension that had me mesmerised for what felt like an eternity.

Estate Lodges: Sanctuaries Of Serenity

The estate offers a collection of exclusive, freestanding lodges, each designed to provide ultimate privacy and tranquillity, with expansive terraces that frame the verdant vineyards below.

From one-bedroom spaces ideal for couples to sprawling family lodges, every option feels like a personal cocoon of comfort.

We stayed in one of the two Presidential Lodges on the property, and the whole experience blew my mind – unparalleled exclusivity from the moment we entered through the Lodge’s doors, where I slipped effortlessly into sophisticated serenity.

As with the rest of the estate, the lodge is designed to create a natural flow, leading us seamlessly from one luxurious space to another. The open-plan lounge is adorned with more of the estate’s South African art, plush furnishings and locally sourced textiles that feel both opulent and inviting. My favourite part was the floor-to-ceiling bi-fold doors across the whole back of the Lodge – opening up to complete panoramic views of the Stellenbosch mountains, enjoyed from the privacy of our own infinity pool and extensive terrace.

For me, it’s the small details that really make a lasting impression, and Delaire understands this completely. From a welcome bottle of their classic rosé alongside traditional South African treats to a taster bottle of their bespoke Delaire Graff perfume waiting for us in each of our bedrooms, to the quality of the loose-leaf teas and coffees on offer in the lodge’s private bar – Delaire’s thoughtful touches really did make our stay feel completely personal.

On turndown service, slippers were placed at the ends of our beds, with a bottle of water alongside a certificate of the amount of carbon we had offset during our stay – both of which are a beautiful nod to Delaire’s commitments to Africa’s future. “Creating responsibly” is so integral to the philosophy at Delaire Graff, that every aspect of the lodges and estate is considered to ensure positive impacts on people and the planet. The water is filtered and bottled onsite, the slippers are made locally, from used plastic bottles that are changed into forever-felt, keeping every guest’s feet warm and cosy, and the linen in the rooms are purposefully not washed every day to help reduce water usage.

Wine Tasting: The Art Of The Vine

At the heart of Delaire’s allure lies its vineyard, producing some of South Africa’s most celebrated wines. Whilst the estate’s roots stretch back to the 1980s, it was 2003 when it entered a new chapter, being acquired by Laurence Graff, founder of Graff Diamonds. Whilst the romanticised story goes that he bought the property after seeing a clear sign in the form of two blue cranes (the national bird of South Africa) dancing in the Stellenbosh mountain sky around the estate, the reality is that the soil in front of where the Delaire graff Restaurant now stands was the first in South Africa to be assessed as 10/10 potential for growing Cabernet wine – the only soils to be so promising at the time.

And thus, under Graff’s meticulous guidance, the estate underwent a transformation, alongside trusted interior designer David Collins, and is continuously evolving to this day, with winemaking remaining its pinnacle art form. Each bottle, from the flagship Botmaskop to the refined Chenin Blanc, is a testament to the estate’s dedication to excellence and craftsmanship.

During the guided wine-tasting experience on the terrace of the wine lounge, we sampled the estate’s ‘icon’ collection which included the Cap Classique, Botmaskop Chardonnay, Terraced Block 2023 Chardonnay, the 2022 Banghoek Merlot and 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon. With uncompromised dramatic mountain views and the plethora of knowledge from the wine sommeliers, this really was an idyllic experience that invites you to awaken your senses. Understanding the nuances of each wine, from the soil and climate conditions to the production methods and tasting notes was fascinating. The icon range wines are renowned for their complexity, rich flavours, and elegance, and now I can see why – It’s a chance to not only taste exceptional wines but to understand the artistry behind their creation.

My favourite? Whilst I always love some bubbles, the Banghoek Chardonnay really stood out for me. Named after the mountainous corridor to which Delaire belongs, this Chardonnay reflects the unique terroir of the Cape Winelands, where the cool climate and rich soils provide the perfect conditions for growing high-quality grapes. On the nose, it offered citrus fruits with a hint of vanilla, and the signature creamy texture that characterises all the well-made Chardonnays was beautifully structured alongside crisp acidic notes for freshness. It’s a must-try for your own visit!

Dining at Delaire: A Culinary Gem

With three on-site restaurants to choose from, there’s no limit to the options at Delaire. From Delaire Graff Restaurant whose cuisine is guided by seasonality and a South African touch, to the newly opened Lorenzo’s Italian restaurant situated under a dramatic iroko timber pergola, and the renowned Hōseki restaurant, there is something for everyone.

The estate’s regenerative farming methods ensure its kitchens benefit from up to 65% of everything being grown on-site. The expert gardening team plants according to seasonal inspirations within the restaurants, and what can’t be grown on-site is ethically sourced from producers who share Delaire’s organic farming philosophy. Working only with local, certified sustainable farms and fisheries to ensure the environment, animals and communities are preserved and respected, the incredible quality of ingredients is thoroughly showcased in the dining experience.

Beyond this, any food waste from the estate is put to good use, being converted into organic, nutrient-rich compost and fertiliser at the on-site wormery. Absorbed at a slower rate than chemically created feed, it is one of the reasons why Delaire’s greenhouse, vegetable garden and vineyards thrive year-round.

We had dinner at the exclusive Hōseki restaurant, an intimate and truly authentic Japanese estate-to-plate dining. The restaurant’s name, meaning “gemstone” in Japanese, reflects its commitment to providing a dining experience that is both rare and exquisite. Under the guidance of renowned Head Chef Virgil Kahn, the restaurant opened after the estate’s remodelling in 2022. Delaire’s commitment to authenticity is clearly shown in this restaurant – hiring the Japanese Consulate General team to train the Hōseki staff in Japanese culture and service methods, as well as working alongside Japanese chefs to develop the menus and cooking techniques.

This is shown in the precision of the food, the professionalism of the service and the genuine connection between the chef, cuisine and guests. At the heart of Hōseki’s offering is the omakase concept, where diners entrust the chef to create a bespoke multi-course meal showcasing the finest seasonal ingredients. We tried this Chef Selection, and I can easily say it’s some of the best quality and tasting Japanese food I have ever had.

Each dish is a masterpiece, carefully curated to balance taste, texture, and presentation. Drawing on traditional Japanese techniques while subtly incorporating elements inspired by the Cape’s local bounty, the Chef’s Selection is both authentic and innovative. A selection of sushi included Bluefin Tuna Sashimi with Lungfish Roe, Bluefish Tuna and Salmon Nigiri, and Spicy Salmon Maki Rolls again with Lungfish Roe, all with daikon-infused wasabi and fresh ginger. Other dishes included a welcome charcoal and squid-ink infused bread and edamame, Cape Wagyu, palette cleansers of fruit sorbets, and an incredibly presented dessert known as Uncle Fluffy Creme Caramel (a must try!)

To complement the dining experience, we sample some expertly paired beverages, including rare sake, and, of course, the estate’s own award-winning wines. These pairings enhance the flavours of each dish, creating a seamless harmony between food and drink.

Spa Facilities: Rejuvenation with a Touch of Luxury

The Delaire Graff Spa is where relaxation meets mindfulness. The treatments, featuring ethically sourced products, are designed to rejuvenate body and spirit. I indulged in a 90-minute treatment, which was completely bespoke. My incredible therapist, Hildegard, invited me into the relaxation room before the treatment, where guests are encouraged to sit and switch off, being given paper and paint to ‘paint how you feel’ before (and then again after) your treatment. A novel concept which I thoroughly enjoyed – it’s not often we let our mind wander and capture this on paper.

Entering the treatment room, Hildegard first had a mini-consultation with me – seeking to understand any areas of tension or concern I had, and asking how I would like to feel following the treatment, inviting me to have a clear image in my mind of that feeling. From this short discussion, she crafted my 90-minute completely personalised treatment that addressed both body and mind, which included elements of Swedish, Lymphatic and Balinese techniques. From a full body massage, lymphatic facial and nourishing scalp treatment, alongside sound bath and breathing meditations, I can easily say this was one of the most unique spa experiences I have had the pleasure of trying.

Again the small touches make the biggest statement – From choosing your own essential oil scent that resonates with your energy before the treatment begins, to the heated treatment beds that cocoon you in warmth and ultimate relaxation and the lavender and scents which envelop you as you place your head into the massage table. Following this, Hildegard told me everything she did and why, offering personalised wellness tips based on the treatment to ensure the care extended beyond the spa. And to top it all off, after the treatment I was invited to linger in the completely private relaxation courtyard attached to my treatment room, where the combination of soothing music, mountain views, and tranquil design invites a state of mindful repose. A mango ice lolly, alongside infused water, was the perfect way to finish the experience – allowing my senses to awaken gently.

Commitment to Community and Conservation

Delaire Graff’s philosophy to “Create responsibly, Give whole-heartedly, Leave no trace” is evident throughout every guest’s stay. But it goes far beyond the estate itself, with clear and tangible socio-economic impacts thanks to the estate’s support of The FACET Foundation (For Africa’s Children Every Time). Established by Delaire’s founder, Laurence Graff in 2008, the Foundation is a charity that works with local partners to improve the lives of children and young adults in Southern Africa.

A stay at Delaire contributes directly to the support of the foundation’s programmes, from the Help Lesotho HIV and gender-based violence charity in Lesotho, Stepping Stones youth empowerment initiatives in Botswana, to the Pebbles Project, which works to improve the livelihoods of local Winelands farming communities in South Africa.

Beyond this, Delaire also prioritises the growth and development of its staff, and it shows evidently in the authenticity of the team. From hiring employees predominantly from the surrounding Winelands, Delaire offers skills training programmes, and access to affordable healthcare, and takes employee safety very seriously by ensuring the availability of transport for teams to get home after long working days.

This genuine commitment to social responsibility and community development in southern Africa is, for me, a big part of what makes Delaire Graff the epitome of luxury – true luxury goes beyond personal enjoyment – it’s about leaving a positive impact and meaningful social change, something Delaire is at the forefront of.

Final Thoughts

Delaire Graff embodies the essence of exclusivity through the experience it creates for every guest. it’s not just about what is provided, but the sense that every detail – no matter how small, has been carefully chosen to create something extraordinary.

The estate’s meticulous craftsmanship, from its emerald-green vineyards and gold-standard service to the sapphire-blue pool views and ruby-rich sunsets over the mountains, ensures a timeless appeal. Whether savouring the award-winning Botmaskop blend or marvelling at the curated art collection, every guest is part of a legacy that celebrates excellence, innovation, and artistry alongside deeply rooted social responsibility and conscious conservation practices.

The dream of Delaire is something everyone should make their reality – each moment there etched in your mind like a masterpiece on the canvas of life, too vivid to fade.

Close your eyes and imagine this: the warm sun on your skin as a soft breeze carries the earthy scent of the savannah; the distant rumble of a lion mingling with the gentle murmur of the Mara River; the sight of acacia trees silhouetted against a dramatic sunset; the taste of freshly baked bread paired with perfectly ripened home-grown fruits, and the feel of smooth, handwoven fabrics as you sink into the comfort of your private veranda.

Welcome to House in the Wild

An incredible sensory journey into the heart of Kenya’s wilderness, House in the Wild completely redefines traditional notions of excessive luxury, instead merging the concepts of exclusivity and simplified comfort with sustainability, cultural authenticity, community and a profoundly mindful connection to nature.

Tucked away in the beautiful Enonkishu Conservancy on the fringes of the Maasai Mara, I spent the week here disconnecting from technology and the things that we deem ‘important’ in our fast-paced city-led lives, to be able to connect with the things that really matter – people, culture, nature and purpose.

Each day was a reminder of the delicate balance between humanity and the wild, and the power of collective action to preserve it. It’s a place that everyone needs to experience – ushering you back to connection over excess, a reframing of perspective on what truly holds value.

It’s hard to put it into words, but let me try to outline what makes House in the Wild (part of the portfolio of Collection in the Wild properties) a truly untamed escape, unlocking new core memories you’ll be reciting for years to come.

Into the wild I go, to lose my mind and find my soul

A Wildly Warm Welcome

The journey to House in the Wild builds excitement with every mile. After a short plane ride over the vast plains of the Maasai Mara, you land on a small airstrip and are greeted by the wide smile of your guide for the week ahead. Whisked away on an exhilarating mini-safari en route to the lodge, the adventure already begins before you even unpack your suitcase!

From the moment of arrival, I felt wrapped in the warm embrace of the wild – in every sense of the word. The lush landscapes of the conservancy unfolding in front of you, the wide smiles and waves of the House in the Wild family envelop you, and the refreshing face towel alongside freshly made lime and ginger water revitalises you (a simple luxury that everyone needs after an early morning of travelling).

The main feeling that will come over you is a feeling of being ‘home’. It’s a wild welcome like no other.

Cosy Cottages and Conscious Craftsmanship

Proud members of The Long Run (a sustainable travel movement helping businesses, people and nature work together), House in the WIld sources all its building materials from sustainable suppliers, and it shows in the lodge’s seamless integration with its natural surroundings. With seven cottages (three of which are family-sized) nestled along the river and a main lodge that has a large lounge, dining area, beautiful bar and swimming pool, the lodge feels like a home-away-from-home, a perfect marriage of rustic charm and sophisticated elegance. Running on 100% solar power, the lodge embodies a commitment to sustainability without compromising on comfort or style.

The lodge also fosters a deeper connection with nature and its conservation ethos through a curated collection of books about rewilding and the wonders of Kenya and Africa’s wildlife. Guests can spend quiet afternoons by the lounge’s cosy fireplace or out on the veranda, diving into stories and studies that illuminate the incredible ecosystems they’re immersed in. For those seeking more space or privacy, the Wild Villas offer an exclusive, luxurious escape. These larger accommodations provide an elevated experience with extra amenities, perfect for families or groups looking to indulge while staying close to the heartbeat of the wild.

My home for the week was the Olerai cottage, consisting of a spacious bathroom (including an outdoor shower – my favourite on safari!), a large bedroom and a lounge area opening up onto a private veranda overlooking the Mara River. This ultimate outdoor-indoor living design fosters a profound connection with the wild. My freestanding bath, perfectly positioned with a view of the river, was accompanied by homemade bath salts and fragrant essential oils, offering the perfect indulgence after an exhilarating early morning game drive. Spotting elephants drinking from the river while soaking in the bath was a pinch-me moment, while eco-friendly amenities reminded me that here, luxury and environmental consciousness go hand in hand – it’s as natural as a zebra’s stripes.

Early mornings are completely magical on safari – catching the sunrise and witnessing nature awaken. For me, it was one of my favourite times of day at House in the Wild. Waking to the delivery of freshly brewed coffee, I would sip it on my private veranda, watching birds flit through the trees as the soft light illuminated the landscape. The chorus of the bush waking – grunts of hippos, distant calls of birds, and the rustle of leaves – was pure contentment. And every evening, I returned to the comfort of my king-sized bed, warmed by a comforting hot water bottle placed under the duvet, draped with soft mosquito nets and adorned with handwoven Maasai blankets. The occasional nocturnal chorus of hyenas and cicadas felt like a lullaby straight from the wild.

It’s clear that every detail has been chosen with care, yet the decor roars with personality. The wooden beams, stone accents, and earthy tones exude warmth and comfort. Local craftsmanship shines through in Maasai-inspired touches—brightly coloured textiles and beadwork adding a vibrant cultural essence. Seating areas are thoughtfully placed to offer uninterrupted views of the river, where hippos bob contentedly, and crocodiles occasionally bask on the banks. Even the art on the walls seems to whisper wild stories of galloping zebras and graceful cheetahs creating a seamless blend of nature, design and storytelling.

Wildlife That Dance To Their Own Tune

Although House in the Wild is situated within the Enonkishu Conservancy, when out on safari game drives, your expert guides will take you to three conservancies – Enonkishu, Ol Chorro and Lemek – all are teaming with different ecosystems and wildlife, which I, for one, am never quite prepared for. Watching a herd of elephants amble by, or a journey of giraffes striding effortlessly into the horizon evokes a sense of awe that’s hard to match. And then, there’s the thrill of observing a pride of lions, their mischievous cubs playfully tumbling over one another as their watchful parents rest nearby.

The safari experience is completely tailored to you. Each evening, your guide will check in to discuss the following day’s plans, helping you choose the best time to start your morning and what specific experiences you’d like to pursue. My guide, Joe, was absolutely the best – he was patient, knowledgeable, and eager to share the wonders of the land. We would rise before the sun every morning, driven by the desire to explore as much as possible.

What I loved most about the game drives is how House in the Wild prioritises authentic and respectful wildlife encounters. Only a limited number of vehicles are allowed at any sighting (and often, we were the only ones), ensuring that the animals are never overwhelmed and you can enjoy an intimate view. The guides emphasise patience, encouraging you to observe the natural behaviours of the animals, rather than rushing to capture fleeting glimpses.

Safaris are about much more than just ‘seeing’ – they are about understanding, learning, and connecting with the land. House in the Wild understands this completely, and their guides are true storytellers in the wild. With a strong commitment to hiring local Maasai community guides, their knowledge of wildlife and ecosystems is intrinsic. It’s mesmerising to listen to them weave fascinating tales about the land, the animals, and the culture. Whether hearing about the way elephants communicate through vibrations in the ground or learning about the Maasai’s deep connection to the land, you can’t help but feel privileged to learn from the true experts who know every hidden corner of the Mara.

Each outing feels like an intimate theatre of the wild, with nature putting on a performance just for you – and nothing beats the final sundowner on safari, watching the sky change colour and the sun set over the plains, with a Savanna cider (or your drink of choice) in your hand and impromptu cameos by mischievous warthogs and regal lions.

Wildly Enriching Activities

The experience at House in the Wild goes beyond just game drives. There’s the option to go for a guided walk on the neighbouring farmland, spotting the plethora of birdlife, or even taking the mountain e-bikes out for a ‘spin’ to explore at a different pace. With the fresh air on your face and zebras never too far away, the freedom of cycling through the conservancy was an absolute joy. The mix of exhilaration and tranquillity as I pedalled through the open savannah was a great reminder of how rare and special these moments in nature are.

For those seeking a truly ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ experience, hot air ballooning over the Maasai Mara should tick that box with ease. There’s nothing quite as exciting as floating over the Mara as the sun rises, spotting the plethora of wildlife below, before landing for a champagne breakfast (something still firmly on my own bucket list).

A visit I found deeply moving was a trip to the Ol Chorro Conservancy Rhino Sanctuary – home to the two remaining Southern White Rhinos in the Maasai Mara. Standing face-to-face with these magnificent creatures, protected 24/7 by a dedicated team of armed rangers, is a humbling and unforgettable experience. It’s impossible not to feel the gravity of their plight and the immense effort it takes to ensure their survival. These rangers are true conservation heroes, and their work is a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between preserving wildlife and combating the threats they face.

Wildly Impactful Initiatives

What distinguishes House in the Wild is its unwavering commitment to three guiding promises: restoring biodiversity, improving livelihoods, and delivering extraordinary experiences. Their Futures in the Wild programme stands as a beacon of how tourism can be a powerful catalyst for transformative change. It’s a perfect example of how luxury travel can align with purpose, creating lasting, far-reaching benefits for local communities, wildlife, and the environment. As a guest, you don’t simply witness this incredible transformation – you actively become a part of it, and I was deeply honoured to spend time at the Mara Training Centre with the passionate individuals who are driving these initiatives forward.

During one of my visits, I sat alongside 30 Maasai women supported by this programme, participating in a beading session. I was in complete awe of their remarkable craftsmanship and the strength of their spirit. What struck me most was how they effortlessly blend the ancient art of beading with modern-day opportunities, transforming a centuries-old tradition into a sustainable livelihood.

The Wild Shamba tree nursery is another shining example of the lodge’s commitment to regenerative practices and community engagement. Here, Maasai women actively plant, care for, and nurture trees, becoming conservation ambassadors within their communities. This initiative not only plays a crucial role in promoting biodiversity but also provides a steady source of income for these women, further demonstrating how environmental sustainability and community development go hand in hand. Through these initiatives, House in the Wild is creating tangible, meaningful change – empowering women and communities, restoring ecosystems, and shaping a more sustainable future for all.

By staying here, you’re not just witnessing conservation in action – you’re actively contributing to it. It’s travel with a wild purpose, and it feels amazing to be part of something so impactful.

A Feast For Your Wild Side

Dining at House in the Wild is an experience worth roaring about. The lodge’s commitment to sustainability shines through its Wild Shamba organic garden that supplies the kitchen with fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs. This farm-to-table philosophy ensures that every dish is not only bursting with flavour but also environmentally conscious. Beyond the Shamba, the lodge collaborates with local suppliers to source fresh meats and other ingredients, including dairy from the family-owned farm nearby, supporting the surrounding communities and fostering a truly Kenyan culinary journey.

Each meal is a delight, thoughtfully crafted from seasonal, organic ingredients that celebrate the vibrant flavours of the Maasai Mara. The culinary adventure begins at sunrise, with freshly brewed teas and coffees accompanied by homemade biscuits – a perfect start to your early morning game drive. Breakfast is equally enchanting, whether enjoyed on the drive or back at the lodge. Imagine warm, freshly baked bread, tropical fruits, homemade granola, and creamy yoghurt, all savoured by the river as hippos snooze and stir in the golden morning light.

Lunch is a colourful feast of salads, grilled meats, or delectable vegetarian alternatives, served under the shade of the trees or at a secluded spot tailored just for you. One of my favourite memories was enjoying lunch by the Mara River, utterly alone except for the sounds of the water and the occasional rustle of wildlife – it felt like dining in a private corner of paradise.

Afternoons bring another indulgence – irresistible cakes and coffee before your evening game drive. Purity, the lodge’s head chef, has an uncanny knack for tempting your taste buds; her freshly baked banana bread became my personal weakness. And every day, I returned to my cottage to find thoughtful little treats awaiting me – a sweet surprise that added an extra layer of joy to the experience.

And dinner? It’s a magical affair. Picture a candlelit table under the vast, star-filled Kenyan sky or a cosy spot by the lodge’s roaring fire. You’ll savour dishes like fresh fish with a side of farm-fresh vegetables, accompanied by the lively antics of vervet monkeys in the garden or the soft rustle of a passing dik-dik. Unlike many lodges that lean toward buffet-style dining, House in the Wild offers an intimate, personalised experience with a three-course dinner meticulously prepared and served with care.

The people make the place

The people at House in the Wild are the soul of this place. Their warmth and enthusiasm for their wild home is infectious. The guides’ enthusiasm is contagious – whether it’s their thrill at spotting a shy leopard or sharing the story behind an elephant’s distinctive ear notch, their knowledge and excitement infuse every moment with wonder. The kitchen staff delight in surprising you with personalised dishes tailored to your tastes, while the front-of-house team remembers every detail of what you enjoy, making you feel truly seen and cared for. Even the housekeeping team goes above and beyond, leaving thoughtful touches like handwritten notes on your bed to make your stay feel uniquely special.

For me, one of the most memorable experiences was learning to play Mancala, a timeless African game steeped in history and cultural significance. Sitting together, listening to the team share childhood memories of playing the game, was more than just a lesson – it was a genuine exchange of stories and laughter that deepened our connection. Every interaction feels heartfelt, fostering relationships that are as authentic as they are meaningful.

There’s always someone on hand with a warm smile or an engaging story about life in the wild. Whether you’re swapping tales of the day’s wildlife sightings, laughing together while inventing new cocktail concoctions at the bar, or unleashing your competitive side over lodge games like table tennis and boules, the camaraderie is palpable. Even in the quieter moments, like being walked back to your cottage under the cover of darkness, there’s a reassuring sense of care and family.

The teamwork at House in the Wild flows as seamlessly as a herd of wildebeest crossing the Mara River – natural, harmonious, and deeply connected. By the time you leave, you’re not just saying goodbye to a lodge but to a group of friends who’ve shared their hearts and passion for this wild corner of the world. It’s a connection that lingers long after you’ve left, making you feel not just like a guest but like a cherished part of the House in the Wild family.

Final Roar: Reflections on the Wild

House in the Wild is more than a safari lodge – it’s a sanctuary for the soul, a place where luxury intertwines seamlessly with purpose. Every moment here, from sunrise coffees by the river to candlelit dinners under the Kenyan sky, whispers the beauty of living harmoniously with nature. The laughter shared, the knowledge gained, and the connections made with the land, wildlife, and people remind you of the delicate balance we must protect.

At House in the Wild, you don’t just visit the wild – you become part of its story, and it’s a story that I simply cannot wait to return to.

As I sit in sheer admiration of the women shaping their own futures, smile in total delight at the wildlife that dances to their own tune, and laugh alongside the vibrant people who bring the magic of the Maasai Mara to life, I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude. This is a constant reminder of the extraordinary tapestry of nature, culture, and humanity that makes being on safari so profoundly special – and Collection in the Wild is a powerful embodiment of how these elements can coexist harmoniously.

Luxury safaris have undergone a significant transformation over the years. What was once focused on the “Big Five” (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo) and indulging in extravagant material comforts has now evolved into holistic and meaningful journeys. In the past, safari camps vied to outdo each other in an “arms race” of extravagance – think infinity pools, gourmet Michelin-starred dining, and ultra-luxurious accommodations.

While undeniably impressive, this race for grandeur often eclipsed the true essence of a safari: connecting with untamed nature, engaging with vibrant cultures, understanding the intricate behaviours of wildlife, and nurturing an appreciation for Africa’s fragile ecosystems.

Today, the definition of luxury has shifted, with many safari camps leading the charge toward sustainability, conservation, and authentic cultural immersion. It’s no longer just about indulgence; it’s about impact, purpose, and forging a deeper connection to the land.

Collection in the Wild, a group of family-owned properties in the Maasai Mara, embodies this new era of responsible tourism. These properties offer exclusive and immersive experiences in the African wilderness, whilst embracing a powerful model of regenerative eco-tourism. By restoring habitats and improving the livelihoods of the local communities who call this land home, Collection in the Wild tells a story of hope, resilience, and meaningful progress. It’s more than just a collection of stays – it’s a collection of impactful journeys.

My own visit to this extraordinary place was more than just an opportunity to witness nature’s beauty; it was a journey into the transformative initiatives that are shaping the future of wildlife protection and community empowerment.

So what makes the Collection in the Wild ‘model’ so meaningful?

From Farmland To Wilderness

Enonkishu Conservancy once degraded farmland, has undergone an extraordinary transformation since 2012. Thanks to the vision of founders Lippa and Tarquin Wood, who partnered with local Maasai communities, this land has been reclaimed for conservation.

Regenerative practices such as managed grazing, tree planting, and habitat restoration are core to this model of transformation. These methods have allowed the ecosystem to heal and flourish, attracting a wide array of wildlife, from the majestic herds of elephants to the elusive leopards that now roam freely. The reforestation of critical areas has brought back native plant species, enriching the landscape and improving water retention in the soil.

One of the cornerstones of this transformation is the holistic grazing model, a carefully managed approach to livestock farming that ensures herds of cattle are rotated across the conservancy in a way that mimics the natural movement of herbivores. This model allows the land to rest and regenerate, giving pastures time to recover between grazing periods. The cattle not only help control invasive plant species but also naturally fertilise the soil with their manure, enriching the land and promoting the growth of indigenous grasses. The result is a healthier, more resilient landscape that supports a wider variety of wildlife and plant life – exactly what you want when you are out on safari!

This approach has created a harmonious balance between people and nature, as local Maasai herders benefit from more sustainable and productive livestock enterprises, while the land thrives under carefully managed grazing regimes. The conservancy has become a model for sustainable co-existence, demonstrating that conservation and agriculture do not have to be at odds. By incorporating local knowledge and expertise, the project has built lasting relationships with Maasai communities, helping them to develop more sustainable livelihoods while preserving the land for future generations.

Empowering Local Communities

One of the most inspiring aspects of my visit was witnessing the profound impact of the initiatives and the incredible people behind them, driving real, lasting change that is so crucial for both the community and the environment.

At the heart of Collection in the Wild’s mission is empowering local communities, particularly women, through initiatives like the Futures in the Wild Programme at the Mara Training Centre. The aim is to create regenerative project models that are replicable and scalable, enabling surrounding communities to become self-sufficient.

Spending time with these inspiring women, and hearing their stories of both struggles and successes, was truly enlightening. Women in rural and indigenous communities are often the primary stewards of natural resources, and by equipping them with skills in sustainable business practices, Collection in the Wild empowers them to safeguard their ecosystems while improving their livelihoods. More than 30 women are currently benefiting from this program.

I had the privilege of joining a beading session with these women. In Maasai culture, beading is a heritage passed down from mother to daughter, and Collection in the Wild provides these women with a platform to transform their traditional craftsmanship into an economically beneficial enterprise. This initiative blends cultural preservation with modern opportunity, enabling women to take control of their futures. Training is a key aspect – women learn sustainable practices like reducing waste while beading, with techniques they can share within their communities. The work is both meaningful and joyful, with laughter filling the air as the women bond over their craft and the vision of a brighter future.

Another enlightening conversation was with Jane, one of the leaders of the Wild Shamba tree nursery. This initiative exemplifies the commitment to regenerative practices and community engagement. Maasai women actively plant and nurture trees, becoming ambassadors for conservation within their communities. The nursery not only promotes biodiversity and food security but also creates sustainable income for the women, who now supply fresh produce to nearby camps and markets.

Training is crucial here too – women learn about the importance of tree planting, the dangers of harmful chemicals, how to improve biodiversity, and how to replicate these practices within their communities. The success of the tree nursery has sparked replication in two local schools and surrounding villages, where youth are now involved in planting, harvesting, and even cooking with the produce.

The Wild Shamba team’s dedication has earned them recognition as one of only 20 organisations in Kenya selected to help achieve the national goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2030. This recognition is a huge accolade for a small team doing incredible work to plant seeds of change across the Maasai Mara, one tree at a time.

Sustainable operations

At each property in the Collection in the Wild portfolio, sustainability is not just a commitment; it is deeply integrated into daily operations. These properties, which include the iconic House in the Wild, the elegant Wild Villas, and the exclusive Wild Hill atop Kileleoni Hill (the highest point in the Maasai Mara), are designed with eco-friendly principles at their core. Sustainable materials are used in construction, and all properties operate on 100% solar energy, ensuring a minimal carbon footprint. In 2025 they plan to work more on water-saving technologies and rainwater harvesting systems to reduce reliance on external sources and minimise waste. Currently, the drinking water comes from a spring in the Enonkishu conservancy and is filtered through a reverse osmosis system, removing the need to rely on plastic bottles for drinking.

Food sustainability is a central pillar. Most ingredients are sourced from the Wild Shamba, where the regenerative farming techniques yield an abundance of fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Items not grown on-site are carefully sourced from nearby farmers and local suppliers, ensuring that the economic benefits of tourism ripple through the community. Kitchen organic waste is then used for compost or to feed the wormery, as well as the resident hens.

Another defining feature of the Collection in the Wild is its dedication to employing and empowering local Maasai people. From expert safari guides to talented chefs and staff, most of the team hails from surrounding villages, bringing with them a deep understanding of the land, culture, and wildlife.

A Blueprint for Responsible Tourism

This shift in what we define as a ‘luxury safari’ is not just a trend; it reflects a growing awareness that true luxury lies in meaningful experiences, fostering a sense of stewardship for the planet, and leaving a positive impact on the communities and ecosystems that sustain these remarkable journeys.

Collection in the Wild’s own journey from farmland to sanctuary illustrates this profound impact of responsible tourism. And one of the best things about this work?
