The word ‘luxury’ is highly subjective, transcending material definitions of excess and instead being deeply tied to an individual’s perceptions, cultural background, and personal desires. This subjectivity is what makes the concept of luxury so dynamic and intriguing.

However, if there is one place I think everyone would agree deserves this ever-evolving ‘title’, it would be Delaire Graff Estate. Placed perfectly within South Africa’s Stellenbosch wine region, the estate invites you to sink into serenity, surrounded by dramatic views, world-class wine, art that speaks to your soul and a team so professional yet personable, committed to championing community and sustainability.

I was honoured with an invitation to stay at this remarkable estate and spent my time immersed in a multidimensional experience. With every detail meticulously curated and an ethos that marries indulgence with responsibility and a deep sense of place, this destination is as dazzling as the diamonds that inspired it.

So let me take you through what makes this extraordinary estate worthy of winning so many awards, most recently holding the title of Best Accommodation in South Africa (Global Traveller’s award) as well as Decanter’s “Best in Show” 2024 for its Banghoek Chardonnay.

First Impressions: Manicured magic

Driving into the grounds of Delaire Graff Estate, before even making it through the doors, what truly captivated me was the overwhelming sense of tranquillity. Despite its grandeur, the Estate feels intimate and welcoming – a retreat where every element whispers of refined indulgence. Driving up the long entrance, framed by sculptural trees and perfectly manicured hedges, with vibrant bursts of colour unfolding around us, set a smile perfectly on my face (one that remained for the whole stay).

The drive itself is a sensory journey, with the Stellenbosch mountains rising majestically in the background and the vineyard-lined pathways guiding us forward. As the estate’s iconic bronze sculptures come into view, strategically placed amidst the lush greenery, it becomes clear that every detail has been curated to evoke wonder. The gardens are a real living art canvas, with over 350 indigenous plants nestled amongst art sculptures and water features.

By the time we step out of the car, the estate has already set the stage for an unforgettable experience.

Decor And Design: A Setting Of Artistry And Elegance

One of the most striking aspects of the estate’s design that I loved is its seamless integration with the natural landscape. Thanks to the creative visions of estate owner Laurence Graff alongside the interior design expertise of David Collins, the expansive glass walls, open terraces, and sweeping vistas ensure that the breathtaking views of the Stellenbosch mountains and vineyards are part of the interior experience. The interplay between indoor and outdoor spaces invites lush greenery, natural light, and changing seasons into the heart of the estate, creating an environment that feels alive and dynamic.

The interiors shimmer with understated opulence – polished stone and natural woods, prioritising sustainable materials that are locally sourced, to ensure the estate shines not just for its beauty but also for its respect for the environment. Fireplaces, artisan-crafted chandeliers, and handwoven rugs add warmth to common spaces, paying homage to African craftsmanship alongside intentional details such as hand-carved woodwork and ceramic pieces. This rich narrative speaks to the estate’s roots and was a delight to see first-hand.

If wine is the beating heart of the estate, the artwork is the soul that breathes life and creativity into every corner – it’s not an accessory, but a defining feature. The earthy palette of the interiors are enhanced by splashes of vibrant colour from the estate’s extensive private art collection. These pieces, predominantly by contemporary South African artists, add cultural depth and are strategically placed to evoke thoughtful reflection from guests of the rich heritage of the region.

With over 450 pieces throughout the estate interiors and grounds, guests can enjoy a dedicated art tour, which is completely fascinating. For me, the pieces that really stood out were of course the Dylan Lewis cheetah sculptures. With a series of 13 cheetahs in the estate gardens, these life-size bronze sculptures embody the raw beauty, elegance, and power of the cheetah, one of Africa’s most iconic animals. The cheetahs represent both the beauty of South Africa’s wildlife and the fragile balance of its ecosystems. They serve as a poignant reminder of the need to protect these majestic creatures and the land they call home.

A piece of art within the Delaire Graff Restaurant also completely captivated me and is one of many important pieces within the estate which shows their dedication to not only celebrating African art, but also fostering meaningful conversations about heritage, resilience, and change. Eddy Kamuanga Ilunga’s “Fragile” is a prominent piece of contemporary art that explores the delicate balance between tradition and modernity in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Known for his signature figures adorned with electronic circuit patterns, Kamuanga Ilunga highlights the impact of global consumerism and technological advancements on Congolese cultural identity. The title, “Fragile,” underscores the vulnerability of individual and collective identities amid rapid modernisation. Vibrant colours and intricate details contrast with minimalistic backgrounds, creating a striking visual tension that had me mesmerised for what felt like an eternity.

Estate Lodges: Sanctuaries Of Serenity

The estate offers a collection of exclusive, freestanding lodges, each designed to provide ultimate privacy and tranquillity, with expansive terraces that frame the verdant vineyards below.

From one-bedroom spaces ideal for couples to sprawling family lodges, every option feels like a personal cocoon of comfort.

We stayed in one of the two Presidential Lodges on the property, and the whole experience blew my mind – unparalleled exclusivity from the moment we entered through the Lodge’s doors, where I slipped effortlessly into sophisticated serenity.

As with the rest of the estate, the lodge is designed to create a natural flow, leading us seamlessly from one luxurious space to another. The open-plan lounge is adorned with more of the estate’s South African art, plush furnishings and locally sourced textiles that feel both opulent and inviting. My favourite part was the floor-to-ceiling bi-fold doors across the whole back of the Lodge – opening up to complete panoramic views of the Stellenbosch mountains, enjoyed from the privacy of our own infinity pool and extensive terrace.

For me, it’s the small details that really make a lasting impression, and Delaire understands this completely. From a welcome bottle of their classic rosé alongside traditional South African treats to a taster bottle of their bespoke Delaire Graff perfume waiting for us in each of our bedrooms, to the quality of the loose-leaf teas and coffees on offer in the lodge’s private bar – Delaire’s thoughtful touches really did make our stay feel completely personal.

On turndown service, slippers were placed at the ends of our beds, with a bottle of water alongside a certificate of the amount of carbon we had offset during our stay – both of which are a beautiful nod to Delaire’s commitments to Africa’s future. “Creating responsibly” is so integral to the philosophy at Delaire Graff, that every aspect of the lodges and estate is considered to ensure positive impacts on people and the planet. The water is filtered and bottled onsite, the slippers are made locally, from used plastic bottles that are changed into forever-felt, keeping every guest’s feet warm and cosy, and the linen in the rooms are purposefully not washed every day to help reduce water usage.

Wine Tasting: The Art Of The Vine

At the heart of Delaire’s allure lies its vineyard, producing some of South Africa’s most celebrated wines. Whilst the estate’s roots stretch back to the 1980s, it was 2003 when it entered a new chapter, being acquired by Laurence Graff, founder of Graff Diamonds. Whilst the romanticised story goes that he bought the property after seeing a clear sign in the form of two blue cranes (the national bird of South Africa) dancing in the Stellenbosh mountain sky around the estate, the reality is that the soil in front of where the Delaire graff Restaurant now stands was the first in South Africa to be assessed as 10/10 potential for growing Cabernet wine – the only soils to be so promising at the time.

And thus, under Graff’s meticulous guidance, the estate underwent a transformation, alongside trusted interior designer David Collins, and is continuously evolving to this day, with winemaking remaining its pinnacle art form. Each bottle, from the flagship Botmaskop to the refined Chenin Blanc, is a testament to the estate’s dedication to excellence and craftsmanship.

During the guided wine-tasting experience on the terrace of the wine lounge, we sampled the estate’s ‘icon’ collection which included the Cap Classique, Botmaskop Chardonnay, Terraced Block 2023 Chardonnay, the 2022 Banghoek Merlot and 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon. With uncompromised dramatic mountain views and the plethora of knowledge from the wine sommeliers, this really was an idyllic experience that invites you to awaken your senses. Understanding the nuances of each wine, from the soil and climate conditions to the production methods and tasting notes was fascinating. The icon range wines are renowned for their complexity, rich flavours, and elegance, and now I can see why – It’s a chance to not only taste exceptional wines but to understand the artistry behind their creation.

My favourite? Whilst I always love some bubbles, the Banghoek Chardonnay really stood out for me. Named after the mountainous corridor to which Delaire belongs, this Chardonnay reflects the unique terroir of the Cape Winelands, where the cool climate and rich soils provide the perfect conditions for growing high-quality grapes. On the nose, it offered citrus fruits with a hint of vanilla, and the signature creamy texture that characterises all the well-made Chardonnays was beautifully structured alongside crisp acidic notes for freshness. It’s a must-try for your own visit!

Dining at Delaire: A Culinary Gem

With three on-site restaurants to choose from, there’s no limit to the options at Delaire. From Delaire Graff Restaurant whose cuisine is guided by seasonality and a South African touch, to the newly opened Lorenzo’s Italian restaurant situated under a dramatic iroko timber pergola, and the renowned Hōseki restaurant, there is something for everyone.

The estate’s regenerative farming methods ensure its kitchens benefit from up to 65% of everything being grown on-site. The expert gardening team plants according to seasonal inspirations within the restaurants, and what can’t be grown on-site is ethically sourced from producers who share Delaire’s organic farming philosophy. Working only with local, certified sustainable farms and fisheries to ensure the environment, animals and communities are preserved and respected, the incredible quality of ingredients is thoroughly showcased in the dining experience.

Beyond this, any food waste from the estate is put to good use, being converted into organic, nutrient-rich compost and fertiliser at the on-site wormery. Absorbed at a slower rate than chemically created feed, it is one of the reasons why Delaire’s greenhouse, vegetable garden and vineyards thrive year-round.

We had dinner at the exclusive Hōseki restaurant, an intimate and truly authentic Japanese estate-to-plate dining. The restaurant’s name, meaning “gemstone” in Japanese, reflects its commitment to providing a dining experience that is both rare and exquisite. Under the guidance of renowned Head Chef Virgil Kahn, the restaurant opened after the estate’s remodelling in 2022. Delaire’s commitment to authenticity is clearly shown in this restaurant – hiring the Japanese Consulate General team to train the Hōseki staff in Japanese culture and service methods, as well as working alongside Japanese chefs to develop the menus and cooking techniques.

This is shown in the precision of the food, the professionalism of the service and the genuine connection between the chef, cuisine and guests. At the heart of Hōseki’s offering is the omakase concept, where diners entrust the chef to create a bespoke multi-course meal showcasing the finest seasonal ingredients. We tried this Chef Selection, and I can easily say it’s some of the best quality and tasting Japanese food I have ever had.

Each dish is a masterpiece, carefully curated to balance taste, texture, and presentation. Drawing on traditional Japanese techniques while subtly incorporating elements inspired by the Cape’s local bounty, the Chef’s Selection is both authentic and innovative. A selection of sushi included Bluefin Tuna Sashimi with Lungfish Roe, Bluefish Tuna and Salmon Nigiri, and Spicy Salmon Maki Rolls again with Lungfish Roe, all with daikon-infused wasabi and fresh ginger. Other dishes included a welcome charcoal and squid-ink infused bread and edamame, Cape Wagyu, palette cleansers of fruit sorbets, and an incredibly presented dessert known as Uncle Fluffy Creme Caramel (a must try!)

To complement the dining experience, we sample some expertly paired beverages, including rare sake, and, of course, the estate’s own award-winning wines. These pairings enhance the flavours of each dish, creating a seamless harmony between food and drink.

Spa Facilities: Rejuvenation with a Touch of Luxury

The Delaire Graff Spa is where relaxation meets mindfulness. The treatments, featuring ethically sourced products, are designed to rejuvenate body and spirit. I indulged in a 90-minute treatment, which was completely bespoke. My incredible therapist, Hildegard, invited me into the relaxation room before the treatment, where guests are encouraged to sit and switch off, being given paper and paint to ‘paint how you feel’ before (and then again after) your treatment. A novel concept which I thoroughly enjoyed – it’s not often we let our mind wander and capture this on paper.

Entering the treatment room, Hildegard first had a mini-consultation with me – seeking to understand any areas of tension or concern I had, and asking how I would like to feel following the treatment, inviting me to have a clear image in my mind of that feeling. From this short discussion, she crafted my 90-minute completely personalised treatment that addressed both body and mind, which included elements of Swedish, Lymphatic and Balinese techniques. From a full body massage, lymphatic facial and nourishing scalp treatment, alongside sound bath and breathing meditations, I can easily say this was one of the most unique spa experiences I have had the pleasure of trying.

Again the small touches make the biggest statement – From choosing your own essential oil scent that resonates with your energy before the treatment begins, to the heated treatment beds that cocoon you in warmth and ultimate relaxation and the lavender and scents which envelop you as you place your head into the massage table. Following this, Hildegard told me everything she did and why, offering personalised wellness tips based on the treatment to ensure the care extended beyond the spa. And to top it all off, after the treatment I was invited to linger in the completely private relaxation courtyard attached to my treatment room, where the combination of soothing music, mountain views, and tranquil design invites a state of mindful repose. A mango ice lolly, alongside infused water, was the perfect way to finish the experience – allowing my senses to awaken gently.

Commitment to Community and Conservation

Delaire Graff’s philosophy to “Create responsibly, Give whole-heartedly, Leave no trace” is evident throughout every guest’s stay. But it goes far beyond the estate itself, with clear and tangible socio-economic impacts thanks to the estate’s support of The FACET Foundation (For Africa’s Children Every Time). Established by Delaire’s founder, Laurence Graff in 2008, the Foundation is a charity that works with local partners to improve the lives of children and young adults in Southern Africa.

A stay at Delaire contributes directly to the support of the foundation’s programmes, from the Help Lesotho HIV and gender-based violence charity in Lesotho, Stepping Stones youth empowerment initiatives in Botswana, to the Pebbles Project, which works to improve the livelihoods of local Winelands farming communities in South Africa.

Beyond this, Delaire also prioritises the growth and development of its staff, and it shows evidently in the authenticity of the team. From hiring employees predominantly from the surrounding Winelands, Delaire offers skills training programmes, and access to affordable healthcare, and takes employee safety very seriously by ensuring the availability of transport for teams to get home after long working days.

This genuine commitment to social responsibility and community development in southern Africa is, for me, a big part of what makes Delaire Graff the epitome of luxury – true luxury goes beyond personal enjoyment – it’s about leaving a positive impact and meaningful social change, something Delaire is at the forefront of.

Final Thoughts

Delaire Graff embodies the essence of exclusivity through the experience it creates for every guest. it’s not just about what is provided, but the sense that every detail – no matter how small, has been carefully chosen to create something extraordinary.

The estate’s meticulous craftsmanship, from its emerald-green vineyards and gold-standard service to the sapphire-blue pool views and ruby-rich sunsets over the mountains, ensures a timeless appeal. Whether savouring the award-winning Botmaskop blend or marvelling at the curated art collection, every guest is part of a legacy that celebrates excellence, innovation, and artistry alongside deeply rooted social responsibility and conscious conservation practices.

The dream of Delaire is something everyone should make their reality – each moment there etched in your mind like a masterpiece on the canvas of life, too vivid to fade.

“In our endeavor to triumph every day, how often do we overlook the little things in favor of the big ones? If the last couple of years has taught us anything, it’s to appreciate the here and now and what’s right in front of us,” says David White, General Manager of Moët & Chandon South Africa. Come to the end of the day…that’s the sky. The earth’s daily swansong is a dazzling affair, a moment of awe when the horizon is ablaze with gold, a moment when we all breathe a collective sigh of relief. Now imagine amplifying that moment and etching it into the memory bank by celebrating the sun and its golden glow from the vantage of a hot air balloon.

Since its maiden voyage in 1990, the ‘Spirit of 1743’s journey around the globe has been nothing short of awe-inspiring, traversing the skies of the world’s great capitals and iconic landmarks including the Great Wall of China, the Statue of Liberty, and the Eiffel Tower. The cork-shaped hot air balloon, which has visited 21 countries in its lifetime including Japan, Australia, and the USA, arrived in Johannesburg for the first time to launch the Moët & Chandon Golden Glow experience.

This iconic emblem of the House offered an ideal perspective from which to view one of the City of Gold’s most overlooked occasions – the magnificent golden glow at the end of the day, and the skies of Johannesburg did not disappoint.

Yesterday, as the sun began its final descent towards the horizon, friends of Moët & Chandon gathered on Inanda Polo Club’s manicured fields, to toast to this iconic first flight set against a luminous golden sky. Celebrities including Boity Thulo, Zoe Msutwana and Zulu Mkhathini arrived in Range Rovers and were invited to charge their glasses and board the ‘Spirit of 1743’ as dusk fell over their city – an experience they all agreed will never be forgotten. They join a cast of a select few worldwide who have had the opportunity to travel in the balloon.

Moët & Chandon Business Development Director Charles de Pontevès led a moment of collective celebration when Joburg’s celebrities raised their glasses at 17:43, in recognition of the founding year of the House and of the importance of acknowledging the golden hour that marks the closing of a day. Moët & Chandon has the ability to take life beyond the ordinary, in this instance offering all those in attendance a moment for pause, reflection, and spontaneous pleasure – one best celebrated with the magic of champagne.

The ‘Spirit of 1743’ is an ambassador of Moët & Chandon’s heritage – its journey set to continue for centuries to come. In the golden glow of South Africa’s City of Gold, successfully elevated the hours of dusk to possibly the most defining moment of the day, a truly fitting prelude to the effervescence of the night.

Your reason to fly.

If I say to you, close your eyes and think of Paris, what image do you see in your mind’s eye? The Eiffel Tower of course. Now do the same with Cape Town… Do you see that iconic postcard image of Table Mountain with the city nestled below being caressed by the beautiful coastline? That is the view you will experience every time you’re on board with Cape Town Helicopters.

It is all about the views for us, and there is no better way to get a bird’s eye view of one of the most magical landscapes on earth than soaring above it with a helicopter.

To enhance this experience Cape Town Helicopters have upgraded their fleet to the best air-tourism helicopters in the world, the Airbus H120 and H130 helicopters.

These machines were purposely built for scenic helicopter flying and offer unsurpassed views from inside their open-air cabins. All seats face forward and are theatre styled, allowing all passengers views to the front and side.

They come standard fitted with air conditioning to allow a comfortable experience to our guests in the hot Cape Town summers.

The H120 and H130 are eco-friendly in terms of noise emissions and operate at half the noise levels of traditional helicopters, perfect for flying around the noise-sensitive Cape Peninsula, you don’t want to make one person’s day and spoil another’s.

Lastly, we added Bose Aviation Grade headsets that cancel out all the noise inside the cabin, allowing you to listen to your pilot give you a guided tour and to communicate with your fellow passengers. All Cape Town Helicopter pilots have qualified tour guides.

We offer a range of scenic flights in and around Cape Town, showcasing all its natural beauty, from statuesque mountains to pristine beaches and historic landmarks. This is a must-do experience when visiting Mother City.

For the more adventurous at heart, there are flights to Gansbaai where you can go shark cage diving or whale watching. We also fly to close-by game reserves if you want to embark on a game drive to see the Big Five.

If you plan on visiting a wine estate whilst in Cape Town then we would love to be your mode of transport, arriving by helicopter is the way to do it. Our pilot and helicopter wait for you whilst you enjoy your wine pairing and lunch before we bring you back to base safely afterward.

For those looking for something a little more exclusive and unique, we have curated 13 Cape Town Experiences which are combinations of scenic helicopter flights, amazing locations, food, wine and art. Let me tell you about two of these unbelievable experiences to give you an idea.

The Fynbos Mountain Gourmet Picnic.

Two Oceans and 1100 indigenous species of Fynbos, 1 of only 7 Floristic Kingdoms on earth.

Fly with us to one of the most stunning picnic spots you’ll ever see.

And we guarantee no one else will be there.

About the experience

The magnificent Cape Point & the many reasons why you should pay it a visit. At the very tip of the Cape Peninsula, 60km southwest of the city of Cape Town, lies the magnificent Cape Point. We fly you from the V&A Waterfront to see the Cape Peninsula from the air and below. Once you have rounded the point we fly back to some hills above Misty Cliffs. This marks the site for our fynbos tour and picnic. We land on Baskloof Private nature reserve owned by Danielle and Ivan Harris. Baskloof was purchased over 40 years ago and has been restored through tireless efforts of the owners.

What you will do

The guide will take you on a 20-minute walk to the top of Platberg, the mountain of the “sleeping dog” which divides and joins Misty Cliffs and Scarborough. Here you experience breathtaking views of Misty Cliffs – possibly something only a few people have seen before. Please be careful when walking in Fynbos not to damage the plants. Always walk looking down and not ahead. Your guide will then take you to a specially selected viewing point which will be the spot for the gourmet picnic. Our CTX chef has prepared a meal based on your requests and dietary requirements. Your host will either be your pilot or a CTX ground host who will make sure the meal is a special proudly south African meal. You will also be treated to wines from Cape Point Vineyards – the most Southern Wine Farm in Africa. After lunch, you will have some time on the reserve to examine the fauna and flora in further detail. We provide some nice comfy cushions (bean bags) so that you can relax and sleep while your food settles. Once properly relaxed we fly you back to the V&A. You might wonder how you can be close to Cape Town but so far away from civilization.

Magical West Coast Mussels and Oysters on the Beach.

We have found a unique place on the West Coast with a ‘boma’ on the beach that serves delicious mussels and oysters.

About the tour

The Mussel and oyster beds are farmed right in front of the property, so they are noticeably in a league of their own, and of course, freshness isn’t a problem. You’ll leave the V&A Waterfront Heli base and fly up the West Coast to Saldanha Bay, to be met by your hosts Kyle and Marti. This is one of those experiences where we prefer to say less and let the pictures tell the story. We can guarantee that this is not “standard seafood” offering. This experience includes the flight, the delicious meal of Mussels and Oysters and champagne (with some starters of bread & smoked fish) as well as soft drinks.

Would you ever have imagined that you can do these amazing experiences with a helicopter?

If we can land there, we can fly there.

Come and fly with us.

There’s a new zero-alcohol drink for those who choose to limit their alcohol intake. And it’s produced by the makers of South Africa’s most awarded gin. Glyn French of Flowstone Gin tells us more.

“The health and wellness trend has been with us for a number of years now, with the last really big focus being the move away from sugar. Most recently we’re seeing a sharp rise in South Africans making conscious decisions to drink responsibly,” says Glyn.

Until recently, the problem has been a lack of drinks that deliver the same taste and sense of occasion that, say, a gin and tonic gives as you toast a beautiful African sunset at the end of a lovely day. Fortunately, creative people in the wine and spirits industry, like Glyn herself, have risen to the occasion.

“We saw the need for true taste-comparable drinks, and have been researching and developing a solution that could stand proudly alongside our Wild Cucumber, Marula, Snuffbox and Bushwillow Gins,” she says.

The result is Flowstone 0%. Carefully developed, using essentially the same lead botanicals found in Flowstone’s signature range of gins, Flowstone 0% is crafted in Glyn’s distillery in the heart of the Cradle of Humankind.

Focusing on two lead botanicals, Wild Cucumber and Marula, without alcohol as the carrier, the distillations are concentrated to provide the same punch of flavour delivery. Unlike a lot of the alcohol-free gins on the market Flowstone’s 0% is actually distilled not just flavoured, she emphasises.

“We are proud of what we have produced,” she says. “Our 0% ‘spirits’ are specifically designed to be enjoyed with tonic in order to deliver a real G&T experience. And, of course, with added garnishes, these drinks are just as celebratory and seductive as any gin.”

To add to the enjoyment0% is tinted with 100% natural colouring: Wild Cucumber 0% is a gentle pink while Marula 0% captures a blush of sunset. Celebratory indeed.

The rise of non- and low-alcohol sips in South Africa

In 2020, South Africa’s total sales of alcohol-free beverages reached 1.34 million cases. The alcohol bans during Covid-19 lockdowns certainly saw sales of craft non-alcoholic drinks skyrocket. But the trend is not confined to those days of austerity, nor to South Africa alone.

Germany and Spain lead the no/low alcohol markets, while the UK and the US are showing rapid expansion (the no/low alcohol segment in the US is forecast to grow by +28% between 2021 and 2025).

According to the 2022 IWSR No- and Low-Alcohol Strategic Study “43% of adults across the focus markets who have purchased no- and low-alcohol beverages say they are substituting those products in place of full-strength alcohol for certain occasions, rather than abstaining from alcohol overall”.

Lulie Halstead, CEO of analytics company Wine Intelligence, says the South African market mirrors this finding, with Millennials and Gen Z drinkers driving the thirst for moderation. She explained to delegates at the Nedbank Vinpro Information Day in January 2022 that she sees the same trend of choosing to drink alcohol on certain occasions only, and adds another sector of “everything in moderation” drinkers – those who pace themselves, drinking both full strength and low-alcohol drinks at the same occasion.

Of course, Glyn points out, there are also those who avoid alcohol completely because they are allergic to it, pregnant, dieting, driving, don’t like it, or for cultural and religious reasons.

“We recognise and applaud the increasing numbers of South Africans who choose to be responsible about their alcohol consumption by drinking occasionally or opting to consume both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks at an occasion. We want everyone, including those who blend, substitute, or abstain, to be able to enjoy the same experience as the fans of our Flowstone Gins. I foresee a time where all drinks trays will have, say, a bottle of Wild Cucumber Gin AND a bottle of Wild Cucumber 0%.”

Taaibosch Wine Estate, the latest acquisition by Oddo Vins and Domaines, has launched three luxury accommodation offerings: two contemporary villas and the newly-renovated Manor House, originally built in 1838.

Taaibosch guests can choose to spend their days relaxing, absorbing the sights and sounds of a working vineyard, or tackling the kilometres of cycling and hiking trails that border the estate on the slopes of the Helderberg. This is also the perfect base for a holiday in the Cape.

The two-bedroom all en-suite Garden Villa is set within the working estate against the backdrop of lush fynbos and landscaped gardens, while the four-bedroom all en-suite Farsight Villa higher up on the slopes of the Helderberg has views that stretch across the Cape Peninsula. The Taaibosch Villas are beautifully designed to allow their luxury interiors to blend harmoniously with the natural beauty outside. Both also offer private pools, fully equipped kitchens for self-catering and a full butler service.

A private chef is available on request, who can either provide a fine-dining chef’s table, or assemble a traditional South African braai. A more informal restaurant is available at the neighbouring co-owned Pink Valley estate, which is known for its rosé vintage.

The 5-bedroomed all en-suite Manor House shaded by hundred-year-old oaks has been newly renovated, retaining historic charm with all the modern comforts of home – perfect for families or small groups who want to experience the area’s rich wine-making heritage.

The gardens at Taaibosch were extensively rehabilitated to contain only indigenous flora, in keeping with the family philosophy of environmental preservation both in their winemaking and in their estate management.

Family, warmth and quality are the hallmarks of the Taaibosch brand, says Managing Director Schalk Joubert who believes that luxury lies in small heartfelt touches. “We have always felt that we have something special here and have spared no expense in ensuring that each of our accommodations has all the best fittings and furnishings.

“The Taaibosch experience is quiet, it is friendly, it is exclusive, and it is small. For a while there has been room to expand, but we have to be careful how we do it, so that we do not lose the special quality that we have. Stellenbosch is very well known for its famous wines, wine farms and its university. All these, may well have put the small farming town on the map, but Stellenbosch has so much more to offer in the way of sites, stays, and activities that deserve just as much attention as its wine production.

Built in 1902 and 1904 respectively, the now Evergreen Manor and Spa was commissioned by a woman, which in itself would have been a rare achievement. Bought and lovingly restored by the current owner Riel Meynhardt and is dear wife, Christina, it’s clear that a lot of time, effort and love has gone into every aspect of this restoration. A member of Cape Country Routes, it is essential to add Evergreen Manor as one of the stops along your Cape Country Travels.

Evergreen Manor is surrounded by students as it is just across the road from Stellenbosch university’s campus, but if someone didn’t tell you this, you wouldn’t know the difference as the area is quiet and peaceful and the students who quietly walk by are very respectful of maintaining the little towns beauty.

The glass door that opens to the front of the hotel is deceptive, as this is the only modern aspect of the entire hotel, beautifully stamped with the hotel’s logo. Beyond those glass doors, the original walkway to this former home is decked out with original wood floors, reminding you of what living in a historical home felt like in the early 1900s. This ambiance is then carried out throughout the entire property including the bedrooms at the top of the stairs, carpeted of course to keep in its warmth.

As we opened the door to our bedroom, it was as though we stepped back in time. From all the furniture in the room, specifically chosen vintage pieces to the paintings on the wall and the bathroom finishes, there was no mistaking where we were. Greeted by a shot of sherry on a beautiful vintage letter desk under the window, it is as though you are living back in the 1900’s, escaping from the modern world just outside the door. Luxury and elegance is an understatement and nowhere is this shown off more than in the luxurious bathroom. The taps so elegant and romantic, and the bath was nothing short of a joy to just soak in for hours, and I mean hours.

Throughout our stay, every time we went to the room, we regularly received courtesy calls from the front desk staff just to check in with us, and make sure that we had everything that we needed. This, only the tip of the ice-berg on the staff and owners’ treatment of us on our stay, from coffee served beside the pool to breakfast in the garden, which kept true to being one of the best breakfasts we have ever had. I’m still trying to figure out how those eggs are made. Treatment nothing short of royalty is what we got from every member of the staff that we encountered which made the stay so much more than just a hotel visit.

Stellenbosch may be well known for wine tasting, but there are tons of trails for hiking and biking all over and around the town. We were so blessed to have had the opportunity to take advantage of an E-bike ride with the Adventure Shop, also a Cape Country Routes member, which met more than any expectations we had. First off, the staff at the office went above and beyond to make sure we were both comfortable and safe, calling ahead to check that we were tall enough to sit comfortably on our bikes. Our tour guides, Sav and Eon, captured a part of Stellenbosch for us that we didn’t even know existed. The rolling hills, mountains, endless views and easy ride on the E-bike, makes this an adventure, something everybody should do. It’s difficult to really capture the essence and beauty of Stellenbosch until you are doing it by E-bike. We drove down to Postcard café for lunch, which is surrounded by mountains, sitting above a still river, complete with a unique wine tasting with Stark-Conde’ that embraces all of the senses. We opted to ride back on our bikes as the views and sites needed more time to take in.

Evergreen Manor and Spa seem like a quiet gem among the modern amenities offered in Stellenbosch, but it by far exceeds hotel stay expectations both in staying pleasure and the history that it captivates around every corner of the hotel. This is a stay not to be missed.

The artist’s limited-edition artwork adorns the packaging of the Grande Couronne 26 Year Old, an opulent whisky finished in rare French Cognac casks.

The world’s most awarded single malt Scotch whisky unveils a distinct collaboration with artists from around the world to celebrate the launch of the Grande Couronne. In Kenya, Glenfiddich presents the artistic vision of esteemed contemporary local artist WiseTwo.

Sitting within Glenfiddich’s Grand Series, Grande Couronne is an opulent 26-year old, whisky which has been finished in French cognac casks, a nod to Glenfiddich’s maverick spirit, consistently pushing the boundaries of whisky innovation.

WiseTwo is one of only 20 artists from around the world invited to reimagine the Grande Couronne’s luxurious design through their artist interpretation, as part of a multi-cultural collaboration titled the Grand Composition. The experienced artist took up the challenge backed by a perfected craft spanning 15 years in different countries. He is credited for painting some of the largest and most outstanding murals in East and Central Africa, and Mexico. He is also one of the first Kenyan artists whose work has been auctioned by the prestigious Sotheby auction house in New York.

The Glenfiddich Grand Couronne is borne from the merging of two worlds coming together: Scottish craftsmanship of fine whisky making and French excellence towards the making of cognac. It is from this merging of craftsmanship that WiseTwo drew his inspiration for the Grand Couronne custom sleeve. He added his distinct style and artistic point of view, bringing to life the elements of ancient fusion, vibrancy and alchemy to add his perspective to the collaboration.

“I have this special thing for the ancient world; I admire how societies in the past would document their lives. We are what we are because of that rich heritage, and so when I am doing my artwork, that’s the fusion I like to portray in my work. The Glenfiddich Grand Couronne is borne from the merging of two worlds. Similarly, my work is a collision of cultures and influences.”

Hieroglyphs (a signature of WiseTwo’s work) around the entire sleeve reinterpret the intricate filigree design featured on the Grande Couronne bottle. There is both richness in design and texture not just when viewed but when touched. He also integrates the subtle shape of a mask at the center of the piece (another signature element from WiseTwo’s work) enhanced by gold foil treatment to give the sleeve an accentuated, royal feeling along with beautiful contrast. In a tribute to his roots, WiseTwo pays homage to his home country in a deliberate quest to make prominent the Kenyan colours on his work.

The Grande Couronne takes it’s luxury cues by borrowing semiotic cues from Cognac. Gold filigree adorns the bottle while a gold capsule sits on top of the sleek, elegant bottle. The package features decorative gold filigree and foiling. A rotating box structure fully reveals the bottle, which sits in front of a French fresco artwork reminiscent of French renaissance paintings.

Reflecting on the collaboration, Glenfiddich Kenya Brand Ambassador Mulunda Kombo remarks: “Something that I love about WiseTwo’s art is that the moment you look at it, you find a point of conversation. You look at it again and a new conversation springs up. This keeps progressing on and on and that’s precisely the beauty of art and Single Malt Whisky: every sip is a whole new experience.”

The Grande Couronne represents the epitome of opulence, cherished for the most meaningful of celebrations. And this spirit WiseTwo envisioned a piece that crowns the moment in a multitude of ways.

“You know, art is a wholesome experience and when I set out to do this, I had this picture in mind of a person sipping the Grande Couronne. I asked myself what experience would I want this person to have more than just enjoying the drink? I didn’t want to draw just a sleeve, I focused on everything-the feel, the texture. I wanted to spark the artistic sense in everyone who would interact with this great whisky.”

The Grande Couronne is the third addition to the grand series which includes the Glenfiddich Grand Cru and the Glenfiddich Gran Reserva.

My future hubby and I had the privilege to spend a few days at Fancourt in the Western Cape, South Africa recently and the experience was unforgettable.

We arrived early one morning and were welcomed by the friendly and very helpful staff. We were then served a generous and very enjoyable breakfast (and champagne – because why NOT celebrate life…). The options on the buffet table were endless, so we had to try a little bit of everything, and it was all just so delicious.

Our room was stunning and spacious with beautiful trimmings and curtains so dense you would not know the sun is up (perfect for a bit of a sleep-in). The view is simply stunning, and a fireplace creates the perfect atmosphere. Oh! And the bed! The bed was so big, we were both stretched out like starfish and our fingers did not even touch, like seriously big.

We had loads of fun, just like two small kids, riding around the picturesque Fancourt on vintage bicycles. There are different bicycle trails to choose from, each taking you through a different part of the beautiful scenery. It was simply beautiful and there were hundreds of different shades of green around us.

Later that day there was a proper holiday vibe around the pool while we were sipping on cocktails and soaking up the sun. Pure bliss.

I am still not done. I promise you, the list of pleasures is almost endless.

Early the next morning, I went for a golf lesson and felt very proud to actually hit the ball. I am no golfer, but really learnt a lot, so I obviously then had to go and apply all my newly acquired skills. We played a few holes in golfer’s paradise (I believe that is the correct terminology in golf). My fiancé is a player of the game of golf himself and in his own words, the facilities were world-class standard with velvet-like greens.

We enjoyed the ultimate relaxation treatment with a full body massage for two at the beautiful and luxurious spa (definitely also world-class). A definite must for anyone who ever visits.

We really had the best time – the food was amazing, the service was excellent, the staff were always friendly, the activities and golf were super fun, the treatments, oh so relaxing and we returned home with a few souvenirs.

The overall experience comes highly recommended.

The spectacular Cape Floral Kingdom sits at the south-western tip of Africa. It is by far the smallest, yet easily the richest of the six floral kingdoms in the world. This unique region, encompassing Cape Town itself, offers an unusual but intricate landscape of flora and fauna. This floral kingdom is predominantly ‘fynbos’ (meaning very fine bush), and it comprises thousands of different species, which attract multiple insects and birds.

The Cape Sugarbird, synonymous with the Protea, is one of six bird species that occurs only in ‘fynbos’.  Sugarbird Cape Fynbos Gin takes its name from this iconic bird, and important distinguishing elements of its taste profile, from ‘fynbos’. This symbolic gin has won for its creators the prodigious status of Winner of Luxury Lifestyle Awards in the category of The Best Premium Gin in South Africa.

The craft spirits’ revolution has been led by gin – after all, it is the perfect candidate, based on its manufacturing history, ingredient complexity, and subtleties of flavor. By the time that Sugarbird gin was founded, at the end of 2017, the craft gin explosion was, in fact, well on its way to becoming a ZAR billion a year industry, and South African gin producers, specifically those in the Western Cape, had begun to make waves in the global renaissance. Perhaps not surprising, given the vast array of fynbos species, 70% of which are found nowhere else in the world.

Sugarbird’s goal was to augment the traditional gin ingredients (Juniper, Grains of Paradise, Coriander, Angelica, Cardamon, etc.) with these unique, flavorful, and diverse “fynbos” plant species, bringing something special to the gin. Crafted over many months, the focus of the first varietal (Sugarbird Original Fynbos) was on creating a gin with a perfect balance between floral and citrus notes. As a result, juniper took rather a back seat. The most distinctive fynbos hero is Agathosma betulina (from the Buchu group of ‘fynbos’), the leaves of which are carefully harvested at a particular time of year, to ensure the minty camphor freshness that juniper normally brings.

One of Sugarbird’s founders, who has a Doctorate in Science, takes a tireless interest in the fynbos species, and quaintly uses only the Latin names to describe the varietals. His continual experimentation results in a constant supply of new combinations and flavors, and not only for gin. The company has, in fact, just launched a rare 14-year-old pure potstill Brandy that is trickle-filtered through honeybush and other Cape botanicals. Sugarbird’s XO Brandy gives a new dimension to traditional South African brandy.

In the process of researching and determining industry leaders, the Luxury Lifestyle Awards experts took into account not only the impeccable quality of Sugarbird Cape Fynbos Gin products, but also an unconventional approach to business organization. The Sugarbird team is characterized by bold, innovative solutions and unexpected collaborations to showcase the quality of its products. The company developed 40ml and 50ml mini bottles for gin from recycled PET, which resulted in a cost reduction and a favorable impact on the environment.

In an effort to provide consumers with not only value, but also as much choice and variety as possible, Sugarbird began collaborating with its competitors – South Africa’s most creative craft gin producers. Thus “Sugarbird & Friends” was born by creating unique multi-brand packages of 5, 9, 12, and 24 x gin minis. Sugarbird undertook selling, design of packaging, label re-design, procurement, bottling, packaging, logistics, finance, and merchandising. In one year, the company sold more than a quarter of a million minis in this way, giving customers a new experience and allowing South African brands to expand their audiences and gain recognition.

“We are delighted that our handcrafted gin, on which we have been working for quite some time, has gained recognition, among both customers and industry experts. Winning the Luxury Lifestyle Awards is a reason to be particularly proud of our local distilling tradition, which has now been recognized at such a high level”, says Matt Bresler, MD of Sugarbird Cape Fynbos Gin.

A shared commitment to heritage, craftsmanship and innovation unites the worlds of whisky making and automotive design with the creation of Bowmore® Masters’ Selection; the first single malt whisky to be made by Bowmore® Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky in collaboration with Aston Martin.

Imagined and defined by two Masters; Bowmore Master Whisky Blender Ron Welsh and Aston Martin Executive Vice President and Chief Creative Officer Marek Reichman, Bowmore Masters’ Selection bridges two distinct worlds in a powerful, yet inspiring way.

At its heart is a mutual trust and respect for one other’s worlds and a passion to discover and learn from each other. Each Master imparts their own creativity and character, but also makes an indelible mark, like leaving their own unique fingerprint, on every single creation.

Marek Reichman, has often spoken about the concept of the ‘Golden Ratio’ – the mathematical ratio found in nature that creates aesthetically pleasing compositions -, which sits at the heart of the design of every Aston Martin. Absolute beauty can be created when you achieve a perfect relationship between each proportion of the car.

Reichman explains: “Proportionality defines every precise detail of designing an Aston Martin. We are constantly striving to achieve the Golden Ratio; the optimal of proportions. And it is this force which guides the creation of absolute beauty. To achieve this, we must combine our skill, passion and experience. Coming together with Ron just brings a whole new perspective on this and is hugely inspiring and enlightening. This whisky perfectly and harmoniously brings us together to create a beautiful, yet powerful equilibrium.”

For Bowmore, proportions define character and shape flavour combinations; from cask selection and age to blending. Ron Welsh, Master Blender, Bowmore, explains, “For the first time with this whisky, we have adopted the Golden Ratio to inspire each of the elements bringing their own unique flavours and selecting the optimal casks to forge the desired character, taking inspiration from Marek and his team. What seems totally contrasting is, in fact, perfectly balanced and proportionate. Working with Marek has given me a new lens from which to explore whisky making. This whisky serves as a celebration of our unified knowledge and experience; our shared passions, values and ideas.”

Taking inspiration from an engineered approach, this whisky incorporates the divine proportion of 61.8% formed from a base of 21 year old Bowmore matured in first fill Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso sherry casks. The remaining parts are made up of exact ratios of each other, in line with the Golden Ratio theory, and include exceptionally aged Bowmore matured for over 35 years.

For this single malt, a powerful and complex yet sweet warming, the creators seems, on the face, to have created absolute contrast but in reality, they have captured perfect balance and proportion. With a clear nod to Aston Martin in the very creation of this Bowmore whisky, it exudes a sophistication and complexity which is truly considered yet promises a thrilling taste experience.

Powerful yet elegant; from sweet to spice; sherry to coffee; honey to pepper – the perfect proportions to achieve absolute depth and balance.

Bowmore Masters’ Selection is available in key global markets including UK, Germany, Canada, USA and China at an RSP of US$300 (ex VAT/duty) from November onwards.
